Winter is a magical season for photographers in Yellowstone and the Tetons. Silence reigns, crowds are nonexistent, and legendary western wildlife stands out against a snowy white tableau. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem contains the largest concentration of free-roaming wildlife in the Lower 48—a nature photographer’s grail—and we stay at coveted spots inside the park for easy access to sunrise and sunset shoots. Seek wolves on the hunt in the open expanse of the Lamar Valley. Get close-ups of bison along the Madison River, with ice-crusted coats and nostrils blowing steam in the frigid air. Photograph herds of elk on the floor of Jackson Hole. Geothermal features make entrancing subjects, too, as geysers erupt in a crystalline spray.
