Faroe Islands

Vacation Overview

Tour Details
Active Elements, Epic Scenery, Off the Beaten Path, Rural Charm, Wildlife Encounters Discover the windswept cliffs, puffin colonies and turf-roofed villages of the Faroe Islands on this independent journey through its wild, remote reaches.

Trip Overview:

Experience the freedom of the open road and the untamed beauty of the Faroe Islands on this self-drive journey through its most striking regions. Begin on Vagar, where sea meets sky at Gásadalur’s cliffside waterfall and the jagged outline of Tindhólmur rises from the Atlantic.

Sail to Mykines, a birdwatcher’s paradise where puffins and gannets nest along sheer cliffs. Then travel south to Suduroy, where panoramic hikes, dramatic rock formations and quiet villages reveal a wilder, more remote character. Visit the historic village of Fámjin, where the original Faroese flag is proudly displayed.

Return to Tórshavn to stroll through its turf-roofed old town and continue to Kirkjubøur, a cultural heartland where medieval ruins tell the story of the islands’ past. From here, head north across Eysturoy to see the sea stacks known as the Giant and the Witch, then on to the colourful village of Gjógv and the scenic heights of Slættaratindur.

Spend a night in Klaksvík and explore the remote northern isles, including Viðareiði—poised at the edge of the world. On your final day, don’t miss a boat tour of the Vestmanna bird cliffs before heading to the airport. This route offers the perfect blend of nature, culture and independence—ideal for travellers who want to see the Faroes at their own pace.

Showcasing a playground and views of the mountains, Hotel Vagar is located in Sorvagur. Guests can enjoy the on-site restaurant. Free private parking is available on site.

Day 2: Discover the Island of Mykines

We suggest a day trip to the bird island of Mykines. The tour begins from the harbour in Sorvagur where you park your car. Enjoy an impressive sailing trip alongside the majestic sea cliffs.

On the island you will see the charming puffins with their colourful red beaks and the striking gannets that only breed on Mykines holm. On your return to Sorvagur, pick up the car and drive to Torshavn. Day trip to the island of Mykines is very popular and must be booked in advance.

Overnight in Torshavn.

Hotel: Hotel Hafnia (4 Star Rating)

Stay in the heart of the city. In the mid-twentieth century Christian Restorff started building a new hotel in Torshavn. The hotel opened in 1951 and was named "Hafnia". In the following decades the hotel expanded drastically, and as time went Hotel Hafnia became the biggest hotel in the Faroe Islands. Hotel Hafnia has 79 rooms in total and 4 cottages. All rooms are non-smoking rooms. They offer rooms for people who suffer from allergy. At Hotel Hafnia they are always ready to accommodate the guests. The reception is open 24/7. The chefs in the restaurant are trained professionals, and they love challenging themselves by cooking new food every day - from scratch of course. They also throw parties and arrange dinners in their event rooms. At Cafe Kaspar, they offer good coffee, drinks, and light meals in a modern but cozy setting. It is possible to order take away from Cafe Kaspar and Restaurant Hafnia as well.

Day 3: Experience Scenic Suðuroy

Take the ferry from Torshavn to the island of Suduroy. The nature on Suduroy varies from that further north and is particularly well suited to hiking. We recommend visiting the lighthouse at Akraberg on the southernmost tip of the island and also Beinisvord, to enjoy the magnificent panorama that unfolds when you get to the top. The village of Famjin, situated in beautiful and dramatic surroundings, is also well worth a visit. The original Faroese flag hangs in the church. In Tvoroyri you can see some of the historic buildings used by the Danish Royal Monopoly Store.

Overnight in Tvoroyri

Hotel: Hotel Bakkin (3 Star Rating)

Hotel Bakkin is centrally located in the village Vagur on the island of Suduroy, close to shops, tourist office and sights. The hotel is within walking distance to the beautiful and dramatic Vagseidi and to Pals Holl, a 50 meters swimming pool, which is named after the local hero Pal Joensen.

The hotel is an ideal base for exploring the island. Hotel Bakkin has a Steak House.

Day 4: Explore Tórshavn and Historic Kirkjubøur

Return to Torshavn with the ferry. Walk through the old town and soak up the atmosphere of the small houses with their white window frames and grass roofs. The old town is unique, not only in the Faroes but in the entire world. Please respect the privacy of the people living in these historical houses.

We recommend a visit to Kirkjubour which is the historical and cultural centre of the country. Back in Torshavn you will find many different restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy excellent food.

Day 5: Viewpoints, Rock Formations and Colourful Villages

Drive across Streymoy passing the old whaling station Vid Air and on over the bridge to the island of Eysturoy. Continue towards the village of Eidi as you take the panoramic route to Gjogv. See the impressive rock formations called Risin and Kellingin and the highest mountain, Slaettaratindur at 882m. Explore the village of Gjogv, famous for its natural harbour. Drive from Leirvik through the subsea tunnel to Klaksvik. The tunnel is decorated with 'light' art by the well-known Faroese artist, Trondur Patursson. It is easy to explore the other Northern Isles from Klaksvik, each with its own dramatic landscape. For example, visit the island of Vidoy which is the northernmost island of the Faroes. Vidoy has two villages - Vidareidi to the north and Hvannasund to the south. While staying in Klaksvik, we recommend exploring the area with a self-guided tour. Spend the night on the Northern Isles.
