An Intimate Sanctuary in Wild Patagonia

Offering extraordinary seclusion with only 13 private rooms and suites, Explora Patagonia National Park is a masterwork of sustainable conservation architecture set deep within the dramatic Chacabuco Valley of Chilean Patagonia. Originally conceived and built by pioneering conservationists Doug and Kristine Tompkins as the jewel of Patagonia National Park, the lodge was crafted entirely from stone quarried directly on-site, reclaimed regional timber, and handcrafted copper roofs—echoing traditional Patagonian estancias and iconic national park lodges.

Located near the colossal Northern Patagonian Ice Field, the lodge looks out upon the sweeping Tamango and Tamanguito mountain ridges, where herds of guanacos graze peacefully outside and Andean condors ride thermal drafts. The park is one of South America's most vital conservation corridors, home to the endangered South Andean huemul deer and one of the highest concentrations of wild pumas on Earth. Small-group daily excursions led by resident naturalists unlock glacial lakes, turquoise rivers, and ancient mountain passes.

The lodge was originally envisioned and constructed by Doug and Kristine Tompkins (founders of Tompkins Conservation, The North Face, and Esprit) as the headquarters and centerpiece of Patagonia National Park. In 2018, the Tompkins donated over 1 million acres of private land to Chile to create the national park. The lodge was built sustainably using local quarry stones and recycled timber and is now proudly operated by Explora.
Patagonia National Park is one of South America's premier wildlife sanctuaries. Travelers regularly encounter wild guanacos roaming right outside the lodge windows, Andean condors soaring overhead, flamingos wading in glacial lagoons, and the endangered South Andean huemul deer. The Chacabuco Valley also boasts one of the highest concentrations of wild pumas in South America.
Guests fly from Santiago (SCL) to Balmaceda Airport (BXX), where Explora provides scheduled luxury van transfers along the world-famous Carretera Austral to the lodge. Alternatively, chartered scenic flights operate directly to the Cochrane airstrip just 18 miles from the lodge.
The lodge operates during the prime Patagonian spring and summer months (October through April). During this period, days are long and vibrant, wildflowers bloom across the steppe, wildlife is exceptionally active with newborn calves and cubs, and trekking conditions across the Northern Ice Field and Lake Cochrane are optimal.
