The City of Wine & Architectural Wonder
Since its unveiling in 2006, Hotel Marqués de Riscal, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Elciego has stood as one of the world's most breathtaking architectural and viticultural achievements. Commissioned by Vinos de los Herederos del Marqués de Riscal to crown their historic 1858 estate, the hotel was envisioned by legendary Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank O. Gehry—his first hotel project and a profound stylistic sibling to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.
Hovering over rolling Rioja Alavesa vineyards, the hotel is instantly recognizable by its cascading ribbons of pink, gold, and silver titanium. These sculptural canopies are directly inspired by the identity of Marqués de Riscal wine: deep pink reflecting the color of Tempranillo red wine, gold paying homage to the iconic wire mesh encasing Riscal Gran Reserva bottles, and silver recalling the wine bottle's foil capsule. Below this titanium ballet, sandstone facades and soaring angular glass walls provide jaw-dropping panoramas of medieval Elciego, the gothic spire of the 16th-century Church of San Andrés, and the rugged peaks of the Sierra de Cantabria.
With just 61 guestrooms and suites divided between the original Gehry Wing and the tranquil Spa Wing, the property offers an intimate, highly personalized sanctuary. Here, guests immerse themselves in the "City of Wine" (Ciudad del Vino), exploring over 160 years of winemaking history, savoring one-Michelin-starred cuisine guided by chef Francis Paniego, and revitalizing body and mind in Spain's premier Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa.
