Trip Report: Buenos Aires

Post Hero
Buenos Aires is the most European of all South American cities. A sprawling metropolis of over 15 million inhabitants, the city is sophisticated, bustling, and cosmopolitan. Buenos Aires is a city of  neighborhoods, each with its own distinct character. A few recommendations, including dining venues:

El Centro
This stately and historic district is where you will find the old Cabildo, the 18th century town hall, La Casa Rosada (Argentina's Presidential Palace), and the Plaza de Mayo, Argentina's most famous square, where citizens gather to celebrate, protest, and come together to mark major milestones. Don't miss the beautiful congress building (modeled after the US Capitol) and the Metropolitan Cathedral, where you'll find the mausoleum of General Jose de San Martin,  Argentina's most revered hero who led the country to independence from Spain in 1816. Nearby is the Obelisk and Avenida 9 de Julio, the broadest avenue in the Western Hemisphere. A few other recommendations:
  • For great views of downtown Buenos Aires, visit the Palacio Barolo (Avenida de Mayo 1370), a 1920s building with a fantastic rooftop deck.
  • For music lovers, visit the stately Teatro Colon (Calle Tucuman 1171), Latin America's top opera house, with daily tours of the sumptuous interiors.
  • One of the world's most beautiful bookstores is El Ateneo Grand Splendid (Avenida Santa Fe 1860), a former theater converted into a five-level temple for book lovers.

San Telmo
This neighborhood is one of the city's oldest, with narrow cobblestone streets, colonial-style home, bustling squares, and many one-of-a-kind stores, bars, and restaurants.

Highlights:
  • Mercado de San Telmo, built in 1897, takes up an entire city block. Inside, you'll find stores selling meat and fresh produce, casual restaurants and bars, and small stores selling antiques and handcrafted items. Don't miss the empanadas!
  • Nearby is the Plaza Dorrego is the city's main flea market (Sundays only).

La Recoleta
Buenos Aires' most elegant neighborhood is home to Argentina's elite and some of the best shops and restaurants in the city. Visit the namesake cemetery (one of Buenos Aires' top attractions) burial place of the country's wealthy and mighty, including Eva Peron.

Highlights:
  • If you visit one regal palace, visit Palacio Paz (Avenida Santa Fe 750), perhaps the grandest of all.
  • The Fine Arts Museum (Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes), the best survey of Argentina's art through the ages.

La Boca
Buenos Aires' original port, blue collar and raffish, is the birthplace of tango and many Argentinian traditions. Visit El Caminito, the area's most famous street, and its colorful painted houses, street art, and bustling atmosphere.

Palermo
This neighborhood is home to the city's best and largest parks, as well as several subdivisions: Palermo Viejo, Palermo Soho, and Palermo Hollywood. The area is known for its trendy boutiques, vibrant bars and nightclubs, and wide range of restaurants.

Don't miss:
  • MALBA, Museo de Arte Latinoamericano, easily South America's best survey of 20th century art.
  • Parque 3 de Febrero (Av del Libertador & Infanta Isabel), also known as Bosques de Palermo, the city's Central Park
  • Museo Eva Peron (Calle Lafinur 2988) for a window into the life of Argentina's former first lady and wife of Juan Domingo Peron, who ruled in the 1940s/1950s. An essential stop to understand Argentina.
Further Afield/Other options:
For repeat clients, or those who are looking for new ideas in/around B.A.
  • For a completely different park experience, visit the Reserva Ecologica Costanera, an island park on the River Plate. An oasis, next to Puerto Madero's high rise buildings.
  • For an urban escape, visit El Tigre and the surrounding delta region, just 20 miles north of central Buenos Aires. Take a boat ride on the canals, marveling at all the homes along the river.
  • For a taste of Uruguay, take the frequent BuqueBus ferry service to Colonia, across the River Plate, just 75 minutes away. Visit a small & charming colonial town, now a UNESCO world heritage site. Don't forget your passport, as there are controls arriving/departing Uruguay.

Restaurants
Buenos Aires has hundreds of excellent restaurants. Three personal favorites, all in the Recoleta neighborhood. Advance reservations a must:
  • El Mirasol de la Recova. Classic Argentinian grill, with excellent dining. Posadas 1032.
  • Fervor. Upscale dining on two levels, with superb meat/fish dishes. Posadas 1519.
  • Roux. Intimate, gourmet restaurant led by famous chef Martin Rebaudino. Calle Pena 2300.
