Years of ExperienceThere are moments in travel that transcend mere sightseeing. They are profound, soul-stirring experiences that etch themselves into your memory forever. Witnessing the Aurora Borealis—the Northern Lights—is one such moment. It’s a celestial ballet of cosmic light, a silent symphony painted across the vast, dark canvas of the polar sky. And while many dream of seeing it, few experience it with the authenticity, comfort, and expertise offered by a Hurtigruten voyage along the Norwegian coast.
Imagine yourself on the deck of an elegant ship, wrapped in warmth, as you glide through serene, ink-black fjords. The air is crisp, pure, and filled with anticipation. Then, it begins. A faint green whisper appears, growing into a vibrant, dancing curtain of emerald, violet, and rose that illuminates the snow-dusted peaks around you. This isn’t a fleeting glimpse from a crowded bus tour; this is an immersive journey into the heart of the Arctic, and Hurtigruten is your trusted guide.
For over 130 years, Hurtigruten has been the lifeblood of the Norwegian coast. More than just a cruise line, it is a national icon, a vital link for remote communities, and the undisputed authority on Arctic exploration. This article is your definitive guide to understanding why a Hurtigruten cruise is not just a trip, but the ultimate way to chase the Northern Lights in unparalleled style and comfort.
In a world of mega-ships and fleeting port calls, Hurtigruten stands apart. Their legacy is built on deep-rooted knowledge of the Norwegian coastline—every hidden cove, every dramatic fjord, every optimal vantage point for celestial phenomena. They don’t just visit the Arctic; they are a part of it.
We understand that a journey of this magnitude is more than a vacation; it's the realization of a lifelong dream. Our experts have sailed these routes and can help you navigate every choice to perfection. To begin crafting your own bespoke journey, you can Get a Custom Quote from our team of Arctic specialists.
Forget the clichés of cruising. A Hurtigruten ship is a masterpiece of Scandinavian design—a warm, intimate, and sophisticated haven designed to connect you with the stunning landscapes outside. The focus is not on waterslides and casinos, but on observation, enrichment, and comfort.
The ship itself is a viewing platform. Expansive panoramic lounges, like the Explorer Lounge, feature floor-to-ceiling windows, allowing you to soak in the epic scenery from the comfort of a plush armchair with a warm drink in hand. Multiple outdoor observation decks provide 360-degree, unobstructed views, perfect for photography and for feeling the sheer scale of the fjords. When the Aurora alarm sounds in the middle of the night—a service you can opt into—you’re just steps away from a front-row seat to the greatest show on Earth.
Dining with Hurtigruten is an adventure in itself. Their celebrated ‘Norway’s Coastal Kitchen’ concept is a commitment to sourcing fresh, local ingredients from the very communities you visit. As you sail, the menu changes to reflect the region. Imagine savoring king crab caught that morning near Kirkenes, tasting artisanal cheeses from the Lofoten Islands, or enjoying cloudberries foraged from the Arctic tundra. It’s a delicious, authentic taste of the coast that connects you deeply to the culture and landscape.
Your cabin is your private retreat. From cozy Polar Inside cabins to expansive Arctic Superior suites with private balconies, every room is a model of clean, functional, and beautiful Scandinavian design. Natural materials like wood and slate, combined with soft lighting and comfortable furnishings, create a serene atmosphere that invites relaxation after a day of exploration.
Choosing the right cabin is key to your experience. Do you want a balcony to enjoy your morning coffee in private? Or a picture window to watch the coastline drift by? Our team can walk you through the options. For immediate assistance, click the 'Chat with us' button in the lower-right corner.
The classic Hurtigruten route is often described as ‘the world’s most beautiful voyage,’ and for good reason. It’s a 12-day round trip from Bergen to Kirkenes and back, but can also be taken as a 7-day northbound or 6-day southbound leg. Here are just a few highlights of this unforgettable journey.
Your adventure begins in the charming city of Bergen, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Before you even board, you can wander through the colorful wooden houses of the Bryggen wharf, ride the Fløibanen funicular for breathtaking city views, and soak in the maritime atmosphere of this historic port.
A significant moment of the northbound journey is crossing the latitude of 66°33’ North—the Arctic Circle. This is marked by a ceremony on deck, a fun tradition where Neptune himself might make an appearance. From this point on, you are officially in the land of the Midnight Sun in summer and the Polar Night in winter, the prime domain of the Northern Lights.
Prepare to be mesmerized. The Lofoten Islands are an archipelago of jagged, dramatic peaks that rise directly from the sea, sheltering picturesque fishing villages with their iconic red ‘rorbuer’ (fishermen’s cabins). The ship navigates through narrow sounds and majestic fjords, including the legendary Trollfjord, offering views so stunning they seem otherworldly.
A vibrant hub of culture and adventure deep within the Arctic Circle. Here, you can visit the striking Arctic Cathedral, learn about polar exploration at the Polar Museum, or simply enjoy the lively atmosphere of a city that thrives in the far north. Tromsø is also a base for some of the most thrilling excursions, like dog sledding and Sami cultural experiences.
An optional but highly recommended excursion takes you to the North Cape, the northernmost point on the European mainland. Standing on the 1,000-foot-high cliff, looking out over the vast, empty expanse of the Barents Sea, is a profound experience. In winter, the stark, snow-covered landscape under the ethereal glow of the polar twilight is simply unforgettable.
Planning these excursions in advance is crucial as they often sell out. Our travel advisors can pre-book all your desired activities to ensure a seamless experience. Why not Inquire About This Sailing and let us handle the details?

The prime Northern Lights season runs from late September to late March. During this period, the nights are long and dark, providing the perfect canvas for the Aurora to appear. October, November, February, and March often offer a good balance of dark skies and slightly more moderate winter conditions.
Layering is key. You should pack thermal underwear (wool is best), fleece or wool mid-layers, and a waterproof and windproof outer jacket and pants. Also essential are insulated waterproof boots, a warm hat, gloves or mittens, a scarf or neck gaiter, and wool socks. Don't forget sunglasses for the glare off the snow and ice, and a swimsuit for the onboard hot tubs!
Hurtigruten operates on a full-board basis, meaning your accommodation, all three meals per day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), and coffee/tea are included. Drinks, excursions, and gratuities are typically extra, allowing you to customize your experience and budget. Some expedition-class ships may have more inclusive packages.
Hurtigruten's Northern Lights Promise is their guarantee on select voyages of 11 days or more during the Aurora season (Sept 26 - Mar 31). If the Northern Lights do not make an appearance during your voyage (as recorded by the ship's crew), Hurtigruten will give you a free 6- or 7-day Classic Voyage to try again the following season.
Hurtigruten offers a wide range of excursions to suit all fitness levels. Activities are graded by physical level, from gentle city walking tours and bus trips to more active adventures like snowmobiling, dog sledding, and hiking. You can choose the activities that best match your comfort and ability.
