Packing for Antarctica is governed by a single golden rule: The 3-Layer System. During the austral summer, temperatures on the Antarctic Peninsula typically hover between 28°F and 38°F (-2°C to +3°C)—milder than winter in Chicago or New York! However, wind and ocean spray can make it feel much colder.
The Three-Layer System Explained
1. Base Layer (Moisture-Wicking)
Pack 2 to 3 sets of 100% Merino wool or synthetic thermal tops and bottoms. Never wear cotton, as it absorbs moisture and leaves you cold.
2. Mid Layer (Insulation)
Polar fleece pullovers, wool sweaters, or lightweight packable down/synthetic puffer jackets that trap warm air close to your body.
3. Outer Shell (Waterproof)
The ship provides your heavy expedition parka. You must bring 100% waterproof pants (Gore-Tex with taped seams) for Zodiac rides.
Crucial Accessories Checklist
- Gloves: Two-part system: thin touchscreen glove liners under heavy-duty waterproof ski mittens.
- Headwear: Wool or fleece beanie that covers your ears, plus a neck gaiter (buff) to block wind.
- Eyewear: Polarized sunglasses with 100% UV400 protection (the sun reflecting off snow and ice causes severe glare).
- Camera Protection: 20L to 30L dry backpack for Zodiac rides, 2 to 3 spare camera batteries (cold drains batteries fast!), and microfiber lens cloths.
- Skin Care: Mineral SPF 50 sunscreen and heavy-duty zinc lip balm (the Antarctic ozone layer is thin).
