From Latitude Zero to the Isles of Evolution: Exploring Ecuador & The Galápagos – Part 2

Part 1 of this series: Our 7-day expedition cruise through the western islands aboard La Pinta.

Our Ecuadorian journey didn’t end when we touched down from the Galápagos archipelago. In many ways, we saved the most astonishing retreat for last: an overland escape northwest of Quito deep into the high-biodiversity Chocó cloud forest to stay at the world-renowned Mashpi Lodge.

The Road to Mashpi Lodge: Descending into the Chocó Biosphere

The scenic drive northwest from Quito to Mashpi Lodge takes approximately three hours. For much of the route, the winding mountain highway is flanked by sprawling subtropical forests dotted with charming Andean villages, agricultural terraces, and fruit stands.

As you leave the paved roadway, the final 45 minutes of the transfer follow a compact gravel forest road that winds gracefully downward through emerald canyons. The transition is remarkably smooth until entering the private 6,000-acre Mashpi Reserve, where the last 15 to 20 minutes provide an exhilarating, authentic off-road ride as your 4x4 maneuvers over the protected forest terrain directly to the lodge’s doorstep.

Adventures in the Chocó forest: contemporary lodge design, pedal-powered Sky Bikes above the canopy, translucent glass frogs, and the Dragonfly gondola.

Architectural Splendor: Living Inside the Forest Canopy

From the exterior, Mashpi Lodge is strikingly unassuming—resembling a secure, modernist research pavilion nestled cleanly into the hillside. However, the moment you step across the lobby threshold, the ambiance transforms completely.

Towering floor-to-ceiling glass curtain walls frame dramatic, panoramic vistas of the surrounding cloud forest canopy. Every architectural angle and interior lounge is intentionally curated to blur the boundary between indoor luxury and pristine equatorial wilderness. With just 24 intimate rooms and suites, Mashpi delivers an exclusive, serene ambiance where every guest receives deeply attentive hospitality. Stays are fully inclusive of all gourmet Ecuadorian dining, tailored amenities, and daily private naturalist-led expeditions.

Upon checking in, guests enjoy a fresh farm-to-table lunch and meet their dedicated expedition guide. We were paired with Lizardo, a passionate naturalist whose botanical knowledge and eagle-eyed wildlife spotting made every excursion unforgettable. To ensure maximum conservation and guest safety, visitors explore the reserve exclusively accompanied by licensed naturalist guides in small groups matched by physical agility.

Into the Canopy: Sky Bikes, Riverbed Treks & Night Safaris

Over the course of our two-night immersion at Mashpi, our days were packed with diverse eco-adventures. We pedaled Sky Bikes along high-tension cables suspended dozens of meters across verdant ravines, explored the educational Life Center butterfly vivarium, and hiked three hours along ancient volcanic riverbeds flanked by moss-draped boulders and crashing waterfalls.

Among all of these exhilarating activities, two distinct experiences stood out as absolute highlights of the stay:

1. Night Hikes: Finding the Translucent Glass Frog

Both evenings after exquisite multi-course dinners, we strapped on headlamps and joined Lizardo for guided nocturnal expeditions into the damp forest floor. These night walks lasted approximately 45 minutes to an hour and moved at an unhurried, observant pace.

The primary mission was locating the region’s celebrated glass frog (Centrolenidae)—a remarkable amphibian whose abdominal skin is completely transparent, allowing you to clearly observe its beating heart, digestive tract, and internal organs in real time.

Coming from a sprawling metropolis like Los Angeles, what struck me most was the profound, absolute sensory darkness. Because of the perpetual dense cloud cover characteristic of this altitude, the moon and stars are shielded from view. When our guide instructed us to extinguish our flashlights, we were immersed in pitch blackness unlike anything experienced in the modern world—punctuated only by the hypnotic nocturnal chorus of tree frogs and cascading streams.

2. The Dragonfly: Soaring 656 Feet Over the Canopy

Another crown jewel of Mashpi Lodge is its state-of-the-art open-air cable gondola, known as The Dragonfly. On one of our excursions, we embarked on the demanding Magnolia Trail, hiking three hours deep down into the river basin along the valley floor.

While the downhill descent through wild orchids and ferns was invigorating, climbing back up the steep canyon wall would have challenged even the fittest hiker. Fortunately, the Dragonfly gondola glides silently across a 2-kilometer cable system suspended 656 feet (200 meters) above the valley floor. Boarding the gondola provided not only a delightfully relaxing transfer back to the lodge, but an awe-inspiring bird’s-eye vantage point floating over primary cloud forest canopy.

While the Galápagos Islands rightly command international acclaim as Darwin’s living laboratory, mainland Ecuador holds an astonishing wealth of cultural and ecological riches. During my meetings with Metropolitan Touring’s senior planners, I asked where they most wish international travelers would explore when visiting Ecuador:
