“The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind and another…” — Maurice Sendak, Where the Wild Things Are

We didn’t have a wolf suit (and we didn’t make much mischief), but when our family landed in South Africa this May, it felt like the start of our own wild rumpus. Destination: &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, where lions roam, giraffes lope, and creatures big and small gather on the airstrip at night. It is one of South Africa’s most celebrated private game reserves, and after three unforgettable nights there, we thoroughly got it.

The Reserve: Seven Ecosystems, No Filler

Phinda sprawls across 73,800 acres of richly varied terrain—grasslands, forest, marsh, mountains, rivers, and the ancient dry sand forest that has become its conservation crown jewel. The locals call it the “Seven Worlds of Wonder,” and it wholeheartedly lives up to the name. On one game drive you are crossing wide-open savannah, and the next you are weaving through fever trees on the fresh trail of a solitary leopard.

And yes, May was absolutely the right call. The dry season kicks off then, bringing crystal-clear skies, crisp mornings, and unbeatable wildlife sightings. No rain. No bugs. No malaria meds required.

Where We Stayed: Two Lodges, Two Distinct Vibes

We split our stay between Phinda Mountain Lodge and Phinda Forest Lodge. We couldn’t have picked a better combination.

Mountain Lodge (2 Nights): Panoramic Ridge Living

Perched on a high ridge with sweeping views across the Ubombo mountain range, this is safari-home-base heaven for families. Private plunge pools, outdoor showers, and big, comfortable suites provide abundant space to stretch out. We enjoyed front-row seats right from our deck when a family of nyala (a graceful forest antelope) casually wandered past our door.

Bush Fine Dining: Lantern-lit boma feasts under the star-studded southern sky, balancing refined gastronomy with relaxed African hospitality.

Forest Lodge (1 Night): Rare Sand Forest Zen

Nestled quietly inside the rare dry sand forest, Forest Lodge is all floor-to-ceiling glass walls and calm, meditative vibes. The lodge’s recent redesign brilliantly nails a Japanese-Zulu fusion aesthetic—both exceptionally elegant and grounded in the earth. Our suite included a second bedroom connected by an exterior timber walkway, which created the perfect setup with a kid in tow.

Wildlife Highlights: The Big Five and Then Some

We saw everything you hope to see on an African safari—and a few things we didn’t expect:

Master Trackers & Guides: Sibu, Bongo, Thulani & Sipho

The real magic wasn’t just in what we saw—it was in how we saw it. Our guides and trackers (Sibu, Bongo, Thulani, and Sipho) were truly next-level. They didn’t just point things out; Bongo managed to spot a chameleon the exact same shade of green as the leaf it was resting on—at night, from a moving vehicle.

They shared rich personal stories (Sibu owns 86 cows), taught us how to interpret animal tracks and towering termite mounds, and expertly shaped the pace and tone of each day around our family’s curiosity.

A Morning We’ll Never Forget

On our final morning at Mountain Lodge, instead of setting out on a standard game drive, Sibu and Bongo pulled into a quiet clearing, set up a tin-can target range, and handed our son an air rifle.

His eyes instantly lit up. For 30 minutes, he had a private bushveld target shooting lesson—just him, the expert guides, and a pile of perforated soda cans.

They didn’t have to do that. But they did. And it was one of the most thoughtful, unexpected moments of the entire trip. That kind of intuitive personalization? You can’t request it on a checklist. But when it happens organically, it sticks with you forever.

Beyond the Safari: Culture and Conservation That Matter

Phinda walks the talk when it comes to genuine community impact. Their partnership with Wild Impact (formerly Africa Foundation) gave our family the chance to visit neighboring Zulu communities—entirely on their own terms. It was honest, informative, and deeply emotional. You see firsthand how closely the reserve is intertwined with the people living around it. Success isn’t siloed here; it is shared.

On the conservation side, Phinda has been decades ahead of the curve: pioneering the rewilding of degraded farmland, protecting critically endangered species, and inviting guests to participate in real-world wildlife research—including rhino notching, elephant collaring, and ground-breaking pangolin monitoring. You don’t just leave with photographs; you leave fundamentally changed.

The Food: Bush Fine Dining Done Right

Every single meal hit the mark. Whether it was a surprise biltong snack paused mid-drive in the bush or a full-on feast in the traditional boma under the southern constellations, the culinary experience straddled the sweet spot between refined fine dining and relaxed warmth. You eat extraordinarily well here—and often.

Would We Do It Again?

We are already talking about returning with extended family in the near future.

&Beyond Phinda isn’t just a luxury safari destination—it is an experience that gets every single detail right. Immersive, deeply personal, environmentally responsible, and filled with magic. If you have children old enough to listen and young enough to still be completely wowed, this is the trip that opens their eyes—and yours.

Like Max in his wolf suit, we left the wild things with our clothes a little dirtier, ourselves a little wiser, and our heads full of stories we will be telling for years to come.
