Embarking Star Legend: Small Ship Elegance

I boarded the beautiful Star Legend in Barcelona for nine wonderful nights. The itinerary had us visiting Cartagena, Gibraltar, Málaga, Valencia, and Palma de Mallorca before returning to Barcelona. This was my second sailing on the Star Legend, and both the ship and her crew were just as wonderful as they were on my first voyage.

Embarkation was remarkably easy and fast. Within minutes of arriving at the cruise terminal, I was personally escorted right to my stateroom so I could settle in, unpack, and refamiliarize myself with the ship. Because I had pre-booked all of my shore excursions directly through Windstar Cruises, my tour tickets were waiting neatly on my desk.

Barcelona: Montjuïc Vistas & Barceloneta Tapas

We were scheduled to overnight in Barcelona, giving guests generous time to enjoy the Catalan capital. The next morning, I joined an excursion that traveled up to Montjuïc with its sweeping vistas across the entire metropolis and Mediterranean harbor, followed by a guided walking tour down through the atmospheric Gothic Quarter (Barri Gòtic).

Following our walk through the historic medieval corridors, Windstar hosted a private Tapas Tasting at a lovely restaurant situated directly on the beach in Barceloneta. It was exceptionally relaxing to sip local Catalan wine while savoring authentic tortilla de patatas, crispy croquetas, and fresh regional seafood while listening to the Mediterranean waves break against the shore.

The Windstar Touch: Grace Under Pressure

The ship was meant to depart Barcelona that evening, but a minor mechanical issue with the bow thruster required repairs before we could safely put to sea. Due to circumstances beyond Windstar's control, that meant we had an extra full day in Barcelona while specialized parts were fitted.

What stood out most was how the captain and crew handled the delay. They were completely transparent, deeply apologetic, and worked tirelessly behind the scenes to optimize the voyage timetable so we still visited every single planned port of call on the itinerary. Every guest onboard took the news in stride, which was wonderful to witness. I spent the unexpected bonus day taking a leisurely stroll down iconic La Rambla, browsing artisan boutiques, enjoying a sunlit patio lunch, and settling into a cozy lounger on the pool deck to read.

Cartagena & Murcia: Baroque Splendor & Siesta Culture

Once the bow thruster was certified and we sailed southward into the sun-drenched waters of Costa Cálida, our first port of call was the ancient naval stronghold of Cartagena. From the harbor, I embarked on a Windstar excursion into the historic inland city of Murcia.

Murcia is an enchanting provincial capital, centered around the breathtaking baroque stone facade and soaring bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Mary. We toured quiet monasteries and strolled through vibrant pedestrian squares. While traveling through Spain during midday means many neighborhood shops close between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM for the traditional siesta, the upside was that my wallet didn't take such a big hit! It was a delight to watch local Spanish families gathering in the sunny plazas, sipping espresso, and enjoying lively street performers.

Gibraltar: Upper Rock, Barbary Macaques & Airport Runway

The following morning, Star Legend docked beside the towering limestone monolith of Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory guarding the strait between Europe and Africa. (At this time, an Electronic Travel Authorization is not required for Gibraltar, though travelers should always verify current entry regulations before departing).

My shore excursion took us winding up into the Upper Rock Nature Reserve to explore St. Michael's Cave—a colossal natural limestone cavern fitted with dramatic lighting. The Upper Rock is also home to Europe's only wild monkey population, the famous Barbary macaques. Our guides repeatedly reminded us to keep bags zipped, refrain from carrying open food, and maintain respectful space. Following those simple rules, our group enjoyed delightful wildlife viewings without any pestering from the curious primates.

At the conclusion of the excursion, we crossed the unique international airport runway—where pedestrian and vehicular traffic halts whenever planes take off or land—to capture the quintessential postcard photograph of the sheer North Face of the Rock of Gibraltar. It is astonishing how much vibrant commerce, British pub culture, and natural history is packed into just 2.6 square miles.

Málaga: Mount Gibralfaro, Picasso & Handcrafted Turrón

Our arrival into Málaga along Andalusia's Costa del Sol began with a panoramic driving tour through upscale seaside neighborhoods, ascending the pine-clad heights of Mount Gibralfaro for panoramic views overlooking the Mediterranean harbor, the bullring, and the terracotta roofs of the historic center.

We then descended into the heart of the city for a walking tour commencing in Plaza de la Merced. This sunlit square is where legendary painter Pablo Picasso spent his childhood; a charming life-sized bronze sculpture of Picasso sits relaxed on a marble bench directly in front of his birthplace home. After our guided tour, I backtracked a couple of blocks to shop at Vicens Torrons Artesans, a historic confectioner highly praised during the previous evening's onboard port talk. Their artisanal almond turrón, pralines, and chocolate treats exceeded every expectation.

At Sea: Spa Rejuvenation & The Star Seeker Preview

The single At Sea day on this nine-night voyage was pure relaxation. I booked a wonderful manicure and pedicure in the onboard World Spa by Windstar before spending quiet hours curled up on the teak deck with a book, savoring an al fresco lunch, and taking an afternoon nap.

That evening, guests gathered in the lounge for the Yacht Club cocktail party. The Captain delivered an exclusive presentation introducing Windstar's newest vessel, Star Seeker. The excitement in the room was palpable—she is slated to bring extraordinary new suite layouts, expanded dining venues, and cutting-edge small ship luxury to the fleet. Because evening temperatures dropped into the brisk low 40s°F, Windstar creatively pivoted from the customary open pool deck barbecue to an intimate Galley Buffet. Walking through the working ship galley during full dinner service provided a rare and fascinating glimpse into the culinary precision required to feed a luxury cruise ship.

Valencia: Requena Caves & Bobal Wine Tasting

Valentine's Day found us docking in Valencia. The thoughtful crew took extra care to decorate public areas, greeting guests with festive Valentine's displays and heartwarming smiles at both the Reception desk and Destination Services office.

For my shore excursion, I chose the Requena Caves and Wine Tasting journey. Our scenic drive climbed inland into the Utiel-Requena wine region. The medieval caves of Requena run beneath the city streets and have been carved out over centuries to store grain, mature wine, and provide shelter during historic conflicts.

After touring the subterranean caves, we visited the prestigious Vera de Estenas estate for an intimate winery tour and tasting. The estate specializes in Bobal, a dark, thick-skinned grape native to Utiel-Requena that produces deeply flavored, balanced red wines and crisp rosés. We tasted several exceptional vintages overlooking the sprawling hillside vineyards, and I took full advantage of the winery's direct shipping service to send bottles straight home to the United States.

Palma de Mallorca: Bellver Castle & La Seu Cathedral

Our final port of call brought us to Palma, the sun-kissed capital of Mallorca in the Balearic Islands. I took part in an extensive city highlights tour featuring Bellver Castle, famously recognized as one of the few completely circular castles built in Europe, having stood atop a pine-covered hill since the 14th century. The interior courtyard features circular Gothic arcades, while the upper battlements offer jaw-dropping views of Palma Harbor and the Tramuntana mountain range.

Next, we marveled at the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma (commonly known as La Seu)—a masterpiece of Catalan Gothic architecture whose dramatic buttresses rise directly above the old port wall. Interestingly, massive side doors open right toward the sea, creating dramatic interior breezes and stunning natural light. Following a guided stroll through Palma's narrow cobbled lanes, we returned to the ship.

Life Onboard Star Legend: Culinary Excellence

I deliberately paced my days on this sailing to ensure I had ample time to relax and thoroughly enjoy the ship. Star Legend is wonderfully comfortable, cozy, and stylish, and her 190 crew members are genuinely top notch. Over nine nights, I visited every single public lounge and dined in every onboard restaurant at least once.

The dining was consistently exceptional:
