costa rica panama canal rainforest expedition guide

The definitive 8-day master expedition guide to exploring Costa Rica's wild Pacific coast, Corcovado National Park, Manuel Antonio, and completing a daylight transit of the historic Panama Canal aboard National Geographic Quest and Venture. Unlock VIP perks with Vincent Vacations.

Costa Rica and Panama Canal Rainforest Expedition Cruise

Where Wild Jungle Meets a Modern Wonder of the World

Spanning the narrow biological land bridge between North and South America, the Pacific coastlines of Costa Rica and Panama shelter some of the densest biodiversity on Earth. From the raw, roadless rainforests of Corcovado National Park on Costa Rica’s Osa Peninsula (described by National Geographic as 'the most biologically intense place on Earth') to the engineering marvel of a full daylight transit through the Panama Canal, exploring aboard National Geographic Quest or National Geographic Venture delivers an unparalleled blend of wild eco-adventure and historical wonder.

Why Sail Costa Rica & Panama with Lindblad Expeditions?

Avoid bumpy mountain roads and long overland transfers by cruising between isolated coastal nature reserves in supreme comfort:

  • 100-Guest Shallow-Draft Expedition Ships: Anchor directly off remote beaches in Golfo Dulce and Coiba Island National Park where commercial cruise ships cannot navigate.
  • Guaranteed Full Daylight Transit of the Panama Canal: Experience the raising and lowering of the ship through Miraflores, Pedro Miguel, and Gatun Locks during optimal daylight hours, accompanied by a dedicated Panama Canal Authority pilot and historian.
  • Corcovado National Park Exclusive Access: Wet-landing Zodiacs on the beaches of San Pedrillo or Sirena to trek through primary lowland tropical rainforests teeming with all four Costa Rican monkey species, tapirs, and scarlet macaws.
  • World-Class Snorkeling in Coiba Island National Park: Snorkel over pristine Pacific coral reefs with white-tip reef sharks, green sea turtles, and kaleidoscopic schools of damselfish.
  • National Geographic Naturalists & Certified Photo Instructors: Master canopy photography of three-toed sloths, keel-billed toucans, and poison dart frogs under the expert guidance of professional OM System photo instructors.

Day-by-Day Expedition Highlights & Route

Day 1: San José, Costa Rica / Puerto Caldera / Embarkation

Arrive in San José, Costa Rica, and transfer through scenic coffee plantations to the Pacific port of Puerto Caldera. Board National Geographic Quest or Venture. Settle into your stateroom with private balcony or large ocean-view windows, and enjoy welcome cocktails as the ship sets sail at sunset.

Day 2: Manuel Antonio National Park

Step ashore at Manuel Antonio National Park, famous for its crescent white-sand beaches framed by lush rainforest canopies. Hike along jungle trails with naturalists using high-powered spotting scopes to locate brown-throated three-toed sloths, mantled howler monkeys, Central American squirrel monkeys, and coatis. Swim in the calm turquoise waters of Playa Manuel Antonio.

Day 3: Corcovado National Park / Osa Peninsula

Anchor off the wild Osa Peninsula. Board Zodiacs for a beach landing at Corcovado National Park. Trek through ancient primary rainforest among 150-foot buttress-rooted trees, spotting scarlet macaws flying in pairs overhead, Baird's tapirs foraging on the forest floor, and colorful poison dart frogs along clear freshwater streams.

Day 4: Golfo Dulce / Casa Orquídeas Botanical Garden

Sail into the calm, fjord-like waters of Golfo Dulce. Watch for mega-pods of spinner and spotted dolphins playing in the tranquil bay. Visit Casa Orquídeas, an exquisite private tropical botanical garden accessible only by boat, showcasing hundreds of blooming orchid species, heliconias, and bromeliads swarming with hummingbirds.

Day 5: Coiba Island National Park, Panama (UNESCO)

Cross into Panamanian waters to explore Coiba Island National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage marine reserve formerly isolated as a penal colony. Snorkel and kayak over vibrant coral reefs teeming with sea turtles, manta rays, and reef sharks. Hike through pristine island trails searching for endemic Coiba howler monkeys.

Day 6: Gulf of Panama / Taboga Island

Explore the remote islands of the Gulf of Panama. Paddleboard through tranquil coves, snorkel around rocky reefs, and take a walking tour of historic Taboga Island (the Island of Flowers), visiting the second-oldest church in the Western Hemisphere.

Day 7: The Panama Canal: Full Daylight Transit

Enter the Panama Canal for an unforgettable full daylight transit. Watch electric 'mule' locomotives guide the ship through the massive chambers of the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks, lifting the vessel 85 feet above sea level. Cruise through the narrow continental divide at the Culebra Cut, sail across scenic Gatun Lake past tropical jungle islands, and descend through the Gatun Locks into the Caribbean Sea.

Day 8: Colón / Panama City / Disembarkation

Disembark in Colón on the Caribbean side. Transfer across the isthmus to Panama City to explore the UNESCO historic quarter of Casco Viejo and the Biomuseo (designed by Frank Gehry), before connecting to your homeward flights arranged by Vincent Vacations.
