Description:

Phantom drinkers, ghostly thieves, and a brownstone literally known as the House of Death—there's no shortage of eerie locales to explore in one of the oldest cities in the United States. Explore Greenwich Village's paranormal phenomena with an expert guide on this evening tour.

Meet your guide in Washington Square Park in the shadow of the Hangman's Elm. The area around you might be charming today, but it hides a darker past. Walk down Gay Street to No. 12, a townhouse built in 1827 next to a morgue with—wait for it—a puppet theater in the basement.

If that sends a chill up your spine (it should), warm up with a drink at the White Horse Tavern—just don't overdo it. Poet Dylan Thomas drank himself to death here and, true to his words, did not “go gentle into that good night.” Instead, he still spooks regulars by showing up at his favorite table from time to time.

Speaking of poets, it wouldn't be a ghost tour if everyone's favorite Gothic author didn't make an appearance. Pass by the house where, once upon a midnight dreary, Edgar Allan Poe first recited “The Raven.” Outside Chumley's Tavern, listen for the jukebox playing. This bar's deceased proprietress likes to spin tunes after a few Manhattans.

Even 5-star restaurants aren't immune from hauntings in this town. One if by Land, Two if by Sea is housed in the former carriage house of Aaron Burr, whose jewelry-loving daughter Theodosia—murdered by pirates—is known to steal earrings from patrons. When the tour ends, continue your exploration of the Village on your own—if you dare.
