Overview
Introduction
Roatan, Honduras, is the largest of the country's Bay Islands. Popular areas include the French Harbour, West End and West Bay. A single road runs the length of the island and many of the towns are situated between the road and beaches.
Roatan is known for its excellent scuba diving locations. The islands Guanaja and Utila are also nearby.
Must See or Do
Sights—West Bay Beach; traditional houses on stilts in Oakridge.
Memorable Meals—Steaks and ribs at Roatan Oasis; king crab at Gio's.
Late Night—Blue Marlin; Sundowners; Frank's Hideaway.
Walks—Strolling the Blue Harbor Tropical Arboretum; a walk through Carambola Gardens.
Location
Roatan has become an increasingly popular destination for North American travelers. Coxen Hole is the island's capital, and the airport, ferry and cruise terminal are located there. However, there is little of interest for tourists in Coxen Hole, and time ashore is better spent exploring the rest of the island.
Shore Excursions
Typical excursions center around watersports, such as scuba diving, snorkeling, paddleboarding and more. General tours of the island stop off at important sights and usually include meals at local restaurants. The beach is always a popular destination.
