You don't have to believe in ghosts to enjoy a place with a good ghost story.
In fact, some of the most interesting spooky destinations aren't really about proving whether something supernatural happened. They're about old buildings, fascinating history, unusual stories and the feeling you get when you're walking through a place that's been around long enough to have accumulated a few secrets.
Why not choose somewhere with a little history and mystery built into the experience? You might find yourself exploring a historic battlefield, walking through centuries-old streets, staying in a property with a story of its own or listening to a local legend after dark. The mystery can be part of the experience without having to become the entire reason for the trip.

Some destinations seem to collect stories simply because they've been around for so long. Old buildings, battlefields, cemeteries, forts and historic neighborhoods have witnessed generations of people and events, and over time, those stories can take on a life of their own.
That's what makes these places interesting even if you're skeptical of anything supernatural. You're getting the architecture, history and local culture first, with a little mystery layered on top. You might take an evening walking tour or hear a local legend, but you can just as easily spend the rest of your trip exploring museums, restaurants, shops and historic sites.
Gettysburg is an obvious choice for this kind of getaway, but its appeal has much more to do with history than the supernatural. The battlefield, historic buildings and town itself provide plenty to explore during the day, while the stories surrounding the Civil War give the area a different atmosphere after dark.

There are evening tours and local stories that explore some of the area's more mysterious history, but you don't have to make that the focus of your visit. Spend the day learning about the battle and the people who lived through it, explore the historic town, and then decide whether you want to hear some of the legends that have developed over the years.
You can also make Gettysburg a broader historical getaway, with museums, historic sites, restaurants and shops giving you plenty to fill a weekend. The battlefield alone offers an experience that can change depending on how you explore it, whether you take a guided tour, visit on your own or simply spend some time taking in the landscape.
St. Augustine brings a completely different kind of history to the experience. Founded in 1565, the city has centuries of stories built into its historic streets, buildings and landmarks, giving it plenty of atmosphere without needing to manufacture a spooky experience.
You can explore the Castillo de San Marcos, wander through the historic district, visit old cemeteries and learn about the people and events that shaped the city. After dark, the same streets take on a different character, and local legends and evening walking tours offer another way to experience them.

There's plenty to do here beyond the historic sites, too. You can spend time exploring the waterfront, browsing shops and galleries, enjoying the local food scene or simply wandering the narrow streets and taking in the architecture before settling in for the evening.
New Orleans is a place where the stories are woven into the fabric of the city. Historic neighborhoods, distinctive architecture, cemeteries, folklore and centuries of cultural history all contribute to an atmosphere that feels different from almost anywhere else.

You can explore the French Quarter, visit historic cemeteries, learn about the city's past and spend an evening hearing some of its more unusual stories. But there's so much more to New Orleans than its mysterious side, from its food and music to its neighborhoods and distinctive culture.
A trip here could take you in a dozen different directions. You might spend the morning exploring a historic neighborhood, linger over lunch, listen to live music in the evening and fit a history or folklore experience somewhere in between.
That's probably my favorite thing about this type of getaway: you get to decide how far you want to take it.
Maybe you want an evening walking tour and a historic inn. Maybe you'd rather spend the day exploring museums and historic sites, have a great dinner and hear a few local legends along the way. You don't have to be the person hoping to encounter something supernatural to enjoy a destination with a fascinating past.
And there's something fun about traveling somewhere with stories you can talk about afterward. Whether you believe them, question them or simply enjoy the history behind them, they give you another way to connect with a place.
Travel is often about the stories we bring home with us, and destinations with a little mystery tend to come with plenty of them.
Maybe you learn something unexpected about an old building. Maybe a guide tells you a story that makes you look at a familiar street differently. Or maybe you spend the weekend debating whether that strange sound in your hotel was actually something—or just an old building settling.
You don't have to believe the story to enjoy telling it. If you're ready to plan a trip that's a little different from the usual getaway, click here to get started.
