When you think about your vacation time for the year, do you picture one big trip you've been looking forward to for months—or would you rather have several smaller getaways scattered throughout the year? There isn't necessarily a right answer. A big trip can give you the chance to completely step away from your normal routine, while shorter getaways can give you more opportunities to recharge throughout the year.

And sometimes the answer isn't either-or. One bigger trip combined with a few long weekends or shorter escapes might give you the best of both. The question is less about which approach is better and more about what you want your vacation time to do for you.
There are some trips that simply need more time. If you've always wanted to visit Italy, explore Alaska, experience Japan or take a European river cruise, you probably don't want to spend most of your vacation getting there and back. A longer trip gives you time to settle in, experience more of the destination and get past that feeling of constantly watching the clock.

There's also something special about having a trip you've been anticipating for months. You have something substantial to look forward to, and when you finally leave, you know you're giving yourself enough time to really get away from everyday life.
But a big trip comes with a bigger commitment, too. It may take more vacation days, require more planning and cost more, and you may need a little time to recover when you get home. That doesn't make it a bad choice—it just means there's more to consider than the destination itself.
A big trip also doesn't have to be your only vacation of the year. You might take the trip you've been saving for and still leave room for a few long weekends or shorter getaways. For some people, that combination offers the best of both: a trip that feels like a true escape, plus smaller breaks throughout the year.
A three- or four-day getaway may not take you as far, but that doesn't mean it can't feel worthwhile. Shorter trips can give you something to look forward to throughout the year instead of putting all your vacation time into one trip. You might spend a long weekend exploring a nearby city, head to the mountains for a few days or simply find somewhere quiet where you can step away from your normal routine.
They can also be easier to fit into a busy schedule. If taking two weeks away from work isn't realistic, several shorter breaks may give you more opportunities to actually use your vacation time instead of waiting for the perfect stretch of days to appear.
And you don't necessarily need to travel far. Sometimes a change of scenery and a couple of days away are enough to make you feel like you've gotten a real break.

Are you trying to completely disconnect? Do you want to experience somewhere you've always dreamed about visiting? Maybe you want more time with your partner, an adventure with friends, a chance to explore somewhere new or simply a few days when nobody needs anything from you.
The answer can change what kind of trip makes sense. A packed itinerary in a new country might be exactly what you need during one season of your life, while a quiet resort where you don't have to make many decisions might sound much better during another.
Your vacation doesn't have to accomplish the same thing every time you travel. What you need from a trip can change depending on what's happening in the rest of your life, and recognizing that can make it easier to decide how you want to spend your limited time away.
The number of vacation days you have isn't necessarily the same as the amount of vacation you're going to experience. A four-day trip that requires two long travel days is a very different experience from a four-day getaway that's a short flight or drive away. If you spend most of your first day traveling and your last day getting home, those days still count.

That's something worth considering when you're deciding between one big trip and several shorter ones. Sometimes a shorter getaway can give you more actual time to relax because less of your vacation is spent getting to and from the destination.
It's also worth thinking about how much energy the travel itself requires. A complicated itinerary with multiple flights, connections or long drives might be completely worthwhile for a special trip, but it may not be what you want when you're only taking a few days away.
Your travel needs can change as your life changes. Maybe you're at a point where you want to take the big trip you've been dreaming about, or maybe work and family responsibilities make several shorter getaways easier to manage. Maybe you have more flexibility than you used to, or maybe you have less.
Maybe you're looking for adventure, or maybe what sounds best right now is three quiet days somewhere beautiful where nobody needs anything from you. There's no reason your vacation style has to stay the same from year to year. The trip that made perfect sense five years ago may not be what you need today, and that's okay.
Whether that means one big trip, several shorter getaways, or a combination of both, the goal is to use your vacation time in a way that gives you the kind of break you're actually looking for.
If you're not sure what kind of travel makes sense for you right now, I'd be happy to help you think it through. We can look at the time you have, what you want from your vacation and the kind of experience you're hoping for, then figure out where to go from there.
