Three Ways to Experience Ireland: Which Trip Would You Choose?

Thinking about Ireland? Take a closer look at three very different ways to experience the Emerald Isle—and what to consider before choosing your itinerary.

Ireland has been on my travel wish list for a while. I haven't made it there yet, so I'm not going to pretend I can tell you what it's like to stand on the Cliffs of Moher or wander into a pub in Galway. But as a travel advisor, I've been spending more time looking at the different ways travelers can experience Ireland, and one thing that stands out to me is just how much the itinerary can change the feel of the trip.

Do you want to see as much of the island as possible? Would you rather have more time to explore? Or is the experience of where you stay just as important to you as the places you'll visit? That's why I thought it would be helpful to look at three guided vacations I'm currently considering for clients. They're all Ireland trips, but they offer noticeably different experiences.

If You Want a Classic Introduction to Ireland

Irish Experience – Signature by Brendan Vacations

This is the itinerary I'd put on the table for someone who says, “I want to see Ireland.” The 11-day journey includes both Ireland and Northern Ireland, with stops including Dublin, Belfast, Galway, the Ring of Kerry and Waterford. It gives travelers a broad introduction to the country without requiring them to figure out how to connect all of those places on their own.

And that's one of the things that stands out to me about a guided vacation like this. You don't have to spend your vacation worrying about the logistics of getting from one place to the next or wondering whether you've built a realistic route. There are also experiences included that go beyond simply checking places off a list, such as time with a local “cabbie” in Belfast who shares personal insight into the city and its history.

For someone looking at Ireland and thinking, “I want to experience a lot of it, but I don't want to plan every piece myself,” this is the type of itinerary I'd want to explore first. It offers a good combination of seeing many of the country's highlights while having the major logistics handled for you.

If You Want More Time to Explore

Amazing Ireland by Trafalgar

Now let's add a few more days. Amazing Ireland is a 14-day guided vacation that also includes Northern Ireland, but expands the itinerary to cover even more of the island. Belfast, Londonderry, Donegal, Galway, Killarney, Cork and Waterford are among the places included, along with experiences such as Giant's Causeway, the Cliffs of Moher, Blarney Castle and the Ring of Kerry.

Those extra days give the itinerary more room to cover ground, and there are some interesting experiences woven into the trip as well. Travelers visit Titanic Belfast and the House of Waterford Crystal, have an opportunity to learn about hurling, and enjoy a meal at the home of Irish chef Catherine Fulvio. So if you look at an 11-day Ireland itinerary and immediately think, “I want to see more,” this is the type of trip I'd want to compare.

But there's something else to consider. A longer itinerary isn't automatically a better vacation. More days can mean more places, but they can also mean more time on the move, so I'd want to think about whether you enjoy waking up and wondering what you're going to see next or whether you'd rather have more time to settle into a place.

That's where your personal travel style comes into the conversation. Two itineraries can visit many of the same iconic places and still feel very different based on their length, pace and overall structure. Those are the kinds of details I'd be looking at before deciding between two trips that might initially appear fairly similar.

If Where You Stay Is Part of the Experience

Castles and Manors – Signature by Brendan Vacations

This itinerary takes a completely different approach. Castles and Manors is an eight-day guided vacation, and you'll still see some of Ireland's beautiful landscapes and landmarks, including Connemara, the Cliffs of Moher and the Ring of Kerry. But what really caught my attention is where you stay.

The Lodge at Ashford Castle is one of the featured accommodations, as is Abbeyglen Castle Hotel. Suddenly, the hotel isn't simply the place where you return at the end of a sightseeing day; the accommodation becomes part of the experience you're traveling for. And I think that's worth paying attention to when you're comparing vacations.

We often look at an itinerary and immediately focus on the sightseeing. What cities are included? What attractions will we see? How many excursions are included? But sometimes the things you'll remember aren't just the places you visited. They can also be the feeling of waking up somewhere special, walking through a historic property, or sitting down for dinner knowing that the place you're staying is part of what made the trip unique.

That's what makes this itinerary so different from the first two. It's not necessarily trying to show you more of Ireland; it's giving you a different way to experience it. If staying somewhere memorable is part of what makes a vacation feel special to you, that's something I'd want to know before we ever started comparing itineraries.

So Which Ireland Trip Stands Out to You?

Looking at these three itineraries, I don't think there's one obvious winner, and honestly, that's the point. Irish Experience – Signature gives you a broad introduction to Ireland and Northern Ireland over 11 days, while Amazing Ireland gives you 14 days and an even more expansive look at the island. Castles and Manors – Signature takes a different approach, making the accommodations themselves an important part of the experience.

Three trips can give you three very different ways to think about an Ireland vacation. So instead of asking, “Which Ireland tour is the best?”, I'd start with a different question: What do you want your Ireland vacation to feel like?

Maybe you want to see as much as possible. Maybe you want more time to explore. Or maybe staying somewhere with history and character is part of the dream. There isn't a wrong answer, and that's one of the things I enjoy about helping clients plan travel: I don't want to simply hand you a list of trips and tell you to pick one. I want to understand what you're hoping to get from the vacation and then help you sort through the options.

If Ireland is on your travel list, let's talk about it. I can help you compare the different ways to experience Ireland and find an itinerary that makes sense for the vacation you're imagining.
