Located 115 mi/185 km southeast of Athens, Naxos, the largest of the Cycladic islands, was once a Venetian possession, so many of its villages have Venetian architecture. It also has good hiking trails and excellent beaches (the ones on the west side of the island are the best). Olive groves, fruit orchards and small farms give the place a bucolic air. On the northern side of the island, in the village of Apollonos, there's an ancient, unfinished statue of Apollo (it was never completed because of a defect in the marble). The island also has an airport.
