I recently had the opportunity to tour Paws Up Montana, and while I knew going in that this was a luxury destination, seeing it firsthand gave me a whole new appreciation for what makes this property so special.

Let's be honest: Paws Up isn't an inexpensive vacation. The price tag can be eye-opening, and it's certainly not going to fit every travel budget. But after experiencing the property, touring the accommodations, and getting a glimpse of everything this working cattle ranch has to offer, I understand much better why people fall in love with it — and why the pricing reflects such a different kind of vacation experience.

Let me tell you what stood out.

First Impressions: Luxury Meets the Montana Wilderness

From the moment you arrive, you realize this isn't your average ranch getaway.

The grounds are pristine. The operation is incredibly polished. And the sheer scale of the property is hard to wrap your head around.

We're talking about approximately 30,000 acres in one of Montana's most beautiful settings, where rugged wilderness meets thoughtful luxury.

Even the transportation makes a statement. Guests staying in the private homes have access to brand-new Lexus SUVs, adding another layer of comfort and convenience to the experience.

But what impressed me most wasn't any single luxury detail. It was how everything came together. The property feels expansive and wild, yet the guest experience is carefully considered at every turn.

You get the feeling that the goal isn't simply to give you a beautiful place to stay. It's to create an experience where you can enjoy the Montana outdoors without giving up the comforts you love.

Those are impressive accomplishments for a property that has stayed rooted in its Montana ranch setting.

And that's what I find so compelling about Paws Up. It delivers a level of luxury and service that earns international recognition, but the experience is still centered on the land, the outdoors, and the spirit of the American West.

After seeing the accommodations, experiencing the hospitality, and getting a taste of what the property offers, I can understand how it has earned that reputation.

Paws Up manages to be both authentically Montana and world-class luxury — and that combination is what makes it stand out.

Luxury Accommodations — With Something for Different Travelers

One of the highlights of my visit was touring several different accommodation styles, including one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes, the glamping tents, and the adults-only Green O section.

And let me clear something up right now.

When Paws Up says glamping, they mean GLAMPING.

We're not talking about a nice canvas tent, a cot, and a lantern.

Think heated floors, air conditioning and heat, chandeliers, butler service, and luxurious touches that make the outdoors feel a whole lot more comfortable.

You can experience the sights and sounds of Montana's wilderness while still enjoying the amenities you might expect at a high-end resort.



For families, the private homes offer another great feature: glamping tents outside for the kids to enjoy. Imagine letting the kids have their own little adventure while the adults have the comfort and space of a beautiful home nearby.



It creates a fun balance between family time, outdoor exploration, and a little breathing room for everyone.

And for multigenerational trips? This setup makes a lot of sense. Grandparents, parents, and kids can enjoy the same destination while having accommodations and experiences that suit different ages and interests.

The Green O: A Different Kind of Montana Escape

The Green O section was another standout during our tour.



This adults-only area features striking treehouse accommodations that feel like they've been designed to blend into the surrounding forest while still offering an extraordinary level of luxury.

The treehouses are a sight to see. They offer a very different atmosphere from the family-oriented homes and traditional glamping accommodations elsewhere on the property.



The Green O also has its own distinctive dining experience. Guests staying in this section can enjoy the restaurant there, where a seven-course dinner is served each evening.



One important detail for anyone considering a visit: the Green O is an adults-only experience, and staying in that section is required to dine at its restaurant.

If you're planning a romantic getaway, anniversary trip, or adults-only escape where the setting, food, and privacy are all part of the experience, this is definitely an area worth exploring.

 

Dining Is Part of the Adventure

At Paws Up, food isn't just something you fit between activities. It's part of the experience.

During our visit, we enjoyed a delicious three-course meal at Pomp, and it was a wonderful example of the dining experience available at the property.





But the culinary options go well beyond a traditional restaurant meal.

Depending on the experience you choose, you might enjoy a chuck wagon dinner featuring tomahawk ribeyes, an elaborate seven-course dinner, or something in between.

That variety is part of what makes the resort interesting. You can lean into the rustic Montana ranch atmosphere one evening and enjoy a more refined dining experience another.

And then there are the s'mores-themed charcuterie boards served around the fire in the evening.

Because apparently, even s'mores get the luxury treatment at Paws Up!

Honestly, sitting around a fire, enjoying something sweet, and taking in the Montana evening sounds like a pretty great way to end a day outdoors.

Adventure Is Everywhere You Look

One thing I appreciated about Paws Up is that it doesn't feel like a place where you have to choose between relaxing and doing something adventurous.

You can do both.

With a working cattle ranch as your backdrop and thousands of acres to explore, the activity options are extensive. Depending on the season and availability, experiences can include:

• Snowmobiling
• Snowshoeing
• Sporting clays

The spa and wellness offerings include massage, yoga, forest bathing, sound bathing, and more.

Forest bathing, for example, is about slowing down and immersing yourself in nature rather than simply walking through it. Sound bathing offers another way to relax and disconnect from everyday distractions.

Combine those experiences with the quiet of Montana's wilderness, and it's easy to see the appeal.

You don't have to be an avid hiker or thrill-seeker to enjoy a destination like this. There's room for relaxation and rejuvenation alongside the adventure.

What Really Sets Paws Up Apart?

Here's where my perspective changed during the visit.

When you first look at a luxury resort's pricing, it's natural to focus on the room rate. That's a big number, and it deserves consideration.

But Paws Up isn't simply selling a room or a tent.

It's offering an entire destination, with an extraordinary setting, distinctive accommodations, a wide range of activities, memorable dining, personalized service, and the opportunity to spend meaningful time together in a place that feels far removed from everyday life.

The staff-to-guest ratio can even exceed one staff member per guest during certain periods, helping explain the level of attention and service the property aims to provide.

Of course, the exact value depends on what's included in your stay, which activities you choose, and how you like to travel. Not every experience is necessarily included in the nightly rate, so it's important to look at the details when comparing options.

But after touring the property, I could better understand how the overall experience contributes to the price.

You're not just paying for where you sleep. You're paying for the setting, the service, the experiences, and the details that make the trip feel extraordinary.

That doesn't mean Paws Up is right for every traveler. And it doesn't mean you have to spend this much to enjoy a wonderful Montana vacation.

It means that if you're considering this particular kind of luxury experience, there's more to evaluate than the nightly rate alone.

Is Paws Up Perfect for a Family or Multigenerational Trip?

I think this is one of the most interesting possibilies.

When you're planning a trip with multiple generations, finding something everyone will enjoy can be a challenge. The grandparents may want relaxation, the parents may want adventure, and the kids may want to be outside doing something exciting every five minutes.

Paws Up offers a combination of accommodations, outdoor activities, dining, and wellness experiences that can appeal to different generations.

I went into my visit knowing Paws Up was a luxury resort. I left with a much better understanding of what makes it stand out.

The pristine grounds, incredible accommodations, unique dining, extensive outdoor activities, wellness experiences, and attention to detail all contribute to a destination that feels genuinely special.

The Green O treehouses are impressive. The glamping accommodations redefine what a tent can be. The working cattle ranch setting gives the experience a distinctly Montana character, and the range of options makes it possible to create a trip that feels personal rather than cookie-cutter.

Is it for everyone? No.

Is it a budget getaway? Absolutely not.

But if you're looking for a truly unforgettable experience — one that combines the beauty of Montana with exceptional comfort, service, adventure, and time together — Paws Up deserves a serious look.
