Years of Experience
There is an Alaska you’ve seen in postcards—the colossal glaciers, the breaching humpback whales, the snow-dusted peaks of Denali. And then there is the Alaska that whispers its secrets only to those who venture closer. It’s an Alaska found in the quiet, mist-shrouded fjords where mega-ships cannot tread, in the ancient Tlingit petroglyphs etched into tidal rocks, and in the candid conversations with fishermen in a town they call "Little Norway." This is the Alaska that changes you. This is the Alaska that HX Expeditions reveals.
For decades, the standard Alaskan cruise has offered a beautiful, if somewhat detached, view of the Last Frontier. It’s a panorama seen from a distance. But for the discerning traveler, the one who craves immersion over observation, an expedition is not just an alternative; it is the only way. It’s a shift from being a spectator to becoming a participant in one of the planet’s most dynamic ecosystems. If you're ready to trade bustling buffets for Zodiac explorations and Broadway shows for lectures on glaciology, then you’ve found your journey. As you delve into what makes this experience so profoundly different, feel free to explore specific sailings using the Cruise Booking Toolbar at the top of this page. When you're ready to see what your own story could look like, you can Plan Your Alaska Adventure with our expert team.
Choosing an expedition cruise is a conscious decision to prioritize depth over breadth. It’s about understanding a place, not just seeing it. HX Expeditions, with its Norwegian heritage rooted in polar exploration, has perfected this philosophy. Here’s what sets their Alaskan voyages apart from the mainstream.
Forget crowds of 3,000. HX vessels are purpose-built, state-of-the-art expedition ships carrying a few hundred guests. This intimate scale is the key that unlocks a more authentic Alaska. It means:
On an HX voyage, the ship is not the destination; it is your comfortable, sophisticated basecamp for discovery. The real luxury lies in the knowledge and access you are given. Every sailing includes a world-class Expedition Team—a handpicked group of experts in marine biology, geology, ornithology, history, and photography. They don't just point things out; they illuminate the intricate web of life and geology around you, turning a beautiful view into a profound understanding.
Sailing with HX means traveling aboard some of the most technologically advanced and environmentally friendly ships at sea. Vessels like the MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen were the world's first hybrid-electric powered expedition ships, a testament to the company's commitment to sustainable travel. This isn't just a talking point; it allows for near-silent sailing in sensitive areas, minimizing disturbance to wildlife and enhancing your connection to the pristine environment.
While the focus is on the world outside, your comfort onboard is paramount. The Scandinavian design is elegant and functional, with natural materials and panoramic windows that keep you connected to the scenery, even from indoors.
Comparing the different cabin categories and their locations on the ship can be nuanced. If you’d like personalized advice on choosing the perfect stateroom for your needs, our specialists have sailed these waters and can offer firsthand insight. Give them a call at our dedicated line: 1 (888) 883‑0460 to discuss the finer details.
While every HX itinerary is subject to the beautiful whims of nature, a typical voyage through Alaska's hidden gems offers a tapestry of unforgettable experiences. This is not a checklist of ports; it’s a deep dive into the soul of the region.
Long before the cruise ships arrived, Wrangell was a significant cultural hub for the Tlingit people. Here, you won't find sprawling jewelry shops. Instead, you'll join your Expedition Team for a walk to Petroglyph Beach, where ancient stories are carved into the rocks, revealed and concealed by the rhythm of the tides. You might also visit the Chief Shakes Tribal House, a stunning replica of a traditional Tlingit community house, to feel the living history of the region.
Nestled on Frederick Sound, Petersburg was founded by Norwegian fishermen over a century ago, and its proud Scandinavian heritage is palpable. You'll see fishing boats with Norwegian names, houses adorned with traditional floral paintings (rosemaling), and a palpable sense of community. The real prize here is the proximity to the LeConte Glacier, the southernmost tidewater glacier in the Northern Hemisphere. An HX expedition will take you by small boat through an ice-strewn bay to witness its active, calving face—a thunderous, awe-inspiring display of nature's power.
This is where the expedition concept truly shines. Carved by ancient glaciers, Misty Fjords is a realm of sheer granite cliffs rising 3,000 feet from the silent, dark water. Waterfalls cascade down rock faces, and the profound quiet is broken only by the call of a seabird or the splash of your Zodiac's wake. You'll board these nimble inflatable boats, expertly piloted by your guides, to navigate close to the cliffs, explore hidden coves, and feel utterly humbled by the scale and serenity of this protected wilderness. Have a quick question about what a day on a Zodiac is like? Click the 'Chat with us' button in the lower right corner and one of our Alaska experts will answer right away.
Throughout your journey, the focus is on finding wildlife in its natural habitat. Your Expedition Team is constantly scanning the shores and waters. You’ll cruise through areas known for their high concentration of humpback whales, like Frederick Sound or Icy Strait Point, and learn about their bubble-net feeding techniques. You'll scan the shorelines of remote islands for brown and black bears. You'll watch for Steller sea lions hauled out on rocky islets and bald eagles perched in the Sitka spruce. This is not a zoo; it’s a living, breathing ecosystem, and you are a privileged guest. Feeling the pull of the wild? Inquire About This Sailing and let us help you customize the perfect expedition.
An HX Expedition in Alaska is an investment in a deeper form of travel. It’s for the curious soul who believes the greatest luxury is not gold faucets, but privileged access and genuine understanding. You will return home not just with photographs of glaciers, but with the sound of their thunderous calving echoing in your memory. You will bring back more than a souvenir; you will bring back a renewed sense of wonder and a profound connection to the wild heart of our planet.
This is your invitation to go beyond the postcard. To experience the raw, authentic, and unforgettable Alaska that awaits in the quiet channels and hidden fjords. The first step is a simple conversation. Let our team of expedition specialists, who share your passion for meaningful travel, help you navigate the options and craft your perfect journey. The Alaska cruise season runs from May to September. May and June offer longer daylight hours and typically drier weather, with blooming wildflowers. July and August are the warmest months and are peak season for whale watching and bear viewing, especially when salmon are running. September brings cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and the beautiful colors of autumn, with a slight chance of seeing the Northern Lights on clear nights.
HX expeditions are designed to be accessible to anyone with a good level of general mobility. Activities are rated by exertion level. You can choose to participate in as much or as little as you like. Activities range from gentle Zodiac cruises and short walks on shore to more strenuous options like kayaking and longer hikes. The Expedition Team will always brief you thoroughly on the conditions and requirements for each excursion.
While wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, Alaska is one of the world's premier viewing destinations. You have a very high chance of seeing humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, bald eagles, and various seabirds. Brown bears (grizzlies) and black bears are also frequently spotted foraging along the coastline, particularly from July onwards. Other, more elusive, animals include moose, wolves, and Dall sheep.
HX is known for its inclusive pricing. Typically, your fare includes your comfortable cabin, all meals in the onboard restaurants, a selection of beverages (beer, wine, soft drinks), all Zodiac cruises and shore landings led by the Expedition Team, lectures and educational programs, access to the Science Center, and even Wi-Fi. Gratuities are also often included. We will provide a detailed list of inclusions and exclusions for your specific sailing when you inquire.
The key to packing for Alaska is layering. Bring a waterproof and windproof outer jacket and pants, a warm fleece or mid-layer, and thermal base layers. Waterproof boots are essential for wet landings. Also pack comfortable clothes for the ship, a hat, gloves, sunglasses, and sunscreen (the sun reflecting off water and ice can be strong). Don't forget your camera with extra batteries and memory cards, and a good pair of binoculars is highly recommended. HX will provide a complimentary expedition jacket for you to use and keep.
