Overview
Introduction
This gorgeous area is a popular vacation spot that extends south from Kentucky into Tennessee. Encompassed by Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake, it has some 170,000 acres/69,000 hectares available for camping, bass fishing, and deer and turkey hunting. The state resort parks in the area—Kentucky Dam Village, Kenlake and Lake Barkley—are particularly nice, with cottages, marinas and golf courses. Stop at the Nature Center and Golden Pond Visitor Center, which has a multimedia theater and a planetarium. On the Tennessee side, you'll find Homeplace—an 1850s working farm that still utilizes 19th-century tools and techniques. Approximately 260 mi/420 km southwest of Lexington. Overview
Introduction
The Land Between the Lakes recreation area in the northwestern part of Tennessee (on the border with Kentucky and 70 mi/113 km northwest of Nashville) is surrounded by Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Within its 170,000 acres/69,000 hectares of rolling forest are opportunities for camping, boating, bass fishing, deer hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking. The Land Between the Lakes is truly a gorgeous area.
Other points of interest include the Homeplace, a living-history farm where costumed interpreters demonstrate the tools and techniques used in the 1800s; the Nature Station outdoor environmental education center; and Golden Pond Visitors Center, which includes a planetarium and observatory. You can see a herd of buffalo (bison) at the Elk and Bison Prairie, a drive-through wildlife park.
Most of the attractions are found along the Trace—the main road through the Land Between the Lakes recreation area—which runs north from Highway 79 near the town of Dover.
