The Land Between the Lakes recreation area in the northwestern part of Tennessee (on the border with Kentucky and 70 mi/113 km northwest of Nashville) is surrounded by Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Within its 170,000 acres/69,000 hectares of rolling forest are opportunities for camping, boating, bass fishing, deer hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding and hiking. The Land Between the Lakes is truly a gorgeous area.
Other points of interest include the Homeplace, a living-history farm where costumed interpreters demonstrate the tools and techniques used in the 1800s; the Nature Station outdoor environmental education center; and Golden Pond Visitors Center, which includes a planetarium and observatory. You can see a herd of buffalo (bison) at the Elk and Bison Prairie, a drive-through wildlife park.
