Jacques Cousteau famously declared Mexico's Sea of Cortez the “World's Aquarium.” There is no place on Earth that embodies the intimacy of marine wildlife encounters quite like Baja California aboard a Lindblad expedition vessel.
From entering the protected gray whale calving lagoons of Magdalena Bay to snorkeling with playful California sea lion pups at Los Islotes, Lindblad has operated in Baja for over 40 years. Below is our complete advisor review of Baja California and Sea of Cortez expeditions.

1. The Gray Whales of Magdalena Bay: Touching a Gentle Giant
The undisputed pinnacle of a Lindblad Baja voyage takes place in Magdalena Bay. Each winter, thousands of eastern Pacific gray whales complete an epic 6,000-mile migration from the Bering Sea to calve in these calm, shallow lagoons.
Aboard small, local pangas guided by certified Lindblad naturalists, guests encounter friendly mother whales and their curious calves who frequently approach the boat surface within touching distance. It is one of the world's most moving, profound wildlife experiences.
2. Snorkeling with Sea Lions & Whale Sharks
Beyond gray whales, the Sea of Cortez teems with staggering marine diversity. Highlights include:
- Los Islotes Sea Lion Rookery: Snorkeling in crystal waters alongside agile young sea lion pups that dart around divers and playfully nip at fins.
- Whale Shark Encounters in La Paz: Swimming alongside the world's largest fish as these gentle spotted filter-feeders cruise through coastal shallows.
- Mobula Ray Acrobatics: Watching thousands of leaping mobula rays launch themselves high into the air and belly-flop into turquoise waves.
3. Small-Ship Agility & Zodiac Marine Encounters
Aboard the 100-guest National Geographic Venture, daily exploration is nimble and responsive to nature. When spotters or bridge radar locate mega-pods of common and bottlenose dolphins or breaching mobula rays, the ship slows and Mark V Zodiacs are immediately lowered. Guests experience the exhilaration of hundreds of wild dolphins bow-riding and leaping beside their craft in mirror-calm desert waters.
