You can't miss the vase when you walk into the living room of Bruce Hamilton and his wife, Christy. It sits prominently on a credenza in their Jacksonville Beach, Florida, home, next to a photo album from Bruce and Christy's 2017 wedding. Less than a year old, the vase has already become a family heirloom, a memento from their vow renewal on their fifth anniversary at Sandals Negril. But it isn't the vase itself that makes them reminisce. It's the blue and pink sand inside, which serves as a constant reminder of the people who poured it on that day.
'The sand represents a blending of our families,' Bruce says, 'but it isn't the kind of blended family that immediately pops into your mind.'
There are other daily reminders of these people they call family, like the ever-growing text threads on Bruce's phone.
'Good morning, my brother from another mother. It's going to be another beautiful day.' It's from Christopher, a butler at Sandals Negril.
Bruce's response: 'Wish we could get together for our afternoon chat later. I miss that.'
Christopher: 'The days are counting down. Whoop, whoop. That's what genuine family is all about.'
The texts and the vase make Bruce and Christy feel like they never completely leave Sandals Negril between their annual trips, which have become tradition since their first anniversary.
'Before that first trip, we thought we'd go down to Sandals and relax on hammocks over the ocean, look at the starfish, and have a few drinks on a balcony with some umbrellas in them. Then we'd keep exploring the world a year later. That's all we expected.'
But then, the unexpected happened.
'The resort itself was above and beyond - the food, the room, the scenery, the relaxing vibe,' Bruce says. 'But the staff really got to us. We had no idea they'd become such close friends and, dare I say, family.'
It started 30 minutes after they arrived in September 2018. Bruce and Christy went to their suite and the butlers introduced themselves as Kenrick and Christopher. The conversation about dinner reservations and fresh coffee in the morning turned to their kids and personal interests. While the bathrobes and ocean view made Bruce and Christy feel freer than they'd ever felt, one thing made them uncomfortable: asking Kenrick and Christopher to wait on them.
'Relax, this is who we are,' Christopher said. 'We enjoy making people happy. We really do.'
Bruce thought about that a little while later when Christopher walked them to dinner at Sundowner Restaurant.
'Any special requests this evening?' said Christopher.
'Actually, yes! Sit down at our table, I'm going to serve the wine for a change!"
The butler team had fielded countless requests over the years - bottles of Yoo-hoo in the fridge and haircuts from personal barbers - but never anything like this. In true butler spirit, Christopher jokingly gave Brue his jacket and gloves, sat down, and watched Bruce pour wine.
Bruce has a photo of the moment on his phone.
'Christy and I still talk about that night. We all loosened up. From that point on, we could just be goofy, fun-loving selves.'
Bruce and Christy did use the hammocks and they did sip tropical drinks almost as rich in color as the Caribbean Sea.
They went paddle boarding and snorkeling, too. The most unforgettable moments, however, were their conversations about life with a growing list of Sandals friends: Christopher, Kenrick, Orlando, Devon, Marielle, O'Neal, and Jeffrey, a photographer who they began to call their Jamaican son.
On the last evening of the trip, Bruce and Christy sat at a beach bar next to a pool table. They remember it as if it were 12 hours ago: easy, breezy, and starry. The kind of night where you wish you had a pause button, so the trip will never end. Jeffrey walked over to them, started to say something, and couldn't get the words out. Instead, he stood at the pool table and used the balls on it to form a heart.
'I can't say goodbye,' he said.
Bruce and Christy would not go on to explore the world after all. Sandals Negril had instantly become their home away from home. In the fall of 2019, a year after not saying goodbye, they came back for Bruce's birthday and their third anniversary. For the 358 days in between, they'd exchanged texts with Kenrick and his wife, Laverne. Christopher would send pictures of the ocean and report-card updates for his son, Javier.
'Family stuff,' Bruce says, 'pretty much every day.'
Most of the resort team didn't know Bruce and Christy were returning, of course. They'd seen thousands of guests during the previous 12 months. That's why it came as such a shock when a restaurant hostess looked up and yelled, 'Oh my gosh! Christy! You're back!' Down on the beach, Devon's jaw went slack when he saw them grabbing paddleboards.
'Bruce? Christy? I didn't know you were coming!'
They shared long hugs with Kenrick, Jeffrey, and Christopher, who pulled out his phone and showed them his all-time favorite picture: Bruce wearing the butler jacket and white gloves, serving wine.
'There's nothing special about us,' Bruce says. 'We're all genuinely interested in each other as people. I guess we just fit in, like family.'
It made perfect sense, then, to have a Retie the Knot ceremony on their fifth anniversary at their Jamaican home, with their Jamaican family. A wedding planner at Sandals Negril organized everything - appetizers, drinks, flowers, dinner, right down to the aisle and the arch on the beach. Bruce and Christy knew how they wanted to close their vows: with a sand ceremony to commemorate two people coming together as one.
Theirs would be different from what anyone at Sandals had ever experienced.
On the day they retied the knot, Bruce and Christy didn't stress or so much as fidget. They relaxed in the shade of a beach cabana. They chatted with their Sandals family. And they allowed the blue hues of the sea to lull them into semi-consciousness.
'Does anyone want some champagne?'
Christy raised her eyes to see Bruce's son, Greg, and Greg's wife, Shea, standing there with a bottle. And she said a phrase, full of surprise and thrill, that seemed to echo throughout the property all week.
'What are you ... doing here?!'
Bruce had asked Greg and Shea to represent family members from the U.S. at the ceremony. They'd heard a lot about Sandals Negril every time Bruce and Christy returned home from a trip. Mostly, they heard about the staff that had become more than staff. They saw pictures of Christopher, Kenrick, and his wife, Laverne. They watched Bruce laugh while exchanging texts with Jeffrey.
'We knew they must be special people,' says Greg, 'but we had no idea how special until we were there to see for ourselves.'
The wedding procession made a profound statement on the beach. Greg and Shea walked forward, followed by a long stream of Sandals staff members, with their spouses and children. When it came time for the sand ceremony, everyone was invited to be part of the special moment.
'I've never seen it done the way Bruce and Christy would like it done,' said the minister. 'But this is how they want it, so this is how we will do it.'
Bruce poured some blue sand into the vase.
Christy poured in pink sand.
Next, Greg and Shea sprinkled in their share of blue. Then came Kenrick, Laverne, and their daughter, Kendra, and Orlando, Christopher, O'Neal, Jeffrey, General Manager David Latchimy, and a host of happy Sandals family members.
But they weren't the only ones there to celebrate Bruce and Christy's forever love.
To their surprise, Bruce and Christy's old neighbors Rick and Karen Seiler from their first trip to Sandals Negril in 2018 joined them at the altar. Becoming such good friends over the years, they reunited for the ceremony and asked to perform the Hamilton's nuptials.
'You just can't make this stuff up,' said Bruce. 'From the ceremony to our Sandals family being part of our special day to the surprise details like Christopher and Kenrick arranging for our favorite local band that plays up and down Negril's 7-mile beach to perform at our reception ... I mean, the type of love and memories we share here will be in our hearts forever.'
On that day, the vase they filled turned into a radiant blend of color and character, of husband and wife, of joy and gratitude, of memories, and of family.
On the credenza in their living room, the sand also represents a blending of homes.
'We look at it every day,' Bruce says. 'And that means they never have to say goodbye.'
You may not have envisioned years ago having a honeymoon that included your own children, or that doing so and still having a romantic time together was even remotely possible.
What you probably had in mind was spending days on end at a Caribbean all-inclusive resort with the love of your life, sinking blissfully into the reality of your new union. You two, as part of this romantic escape, would soak in the passion of the islands, fall deeper in love while sipping Pina Coladas on a dreamy white-sand beach… you know, the whole shebang.
Your vision probably did not involve kids at that time, but today it might.
The good news? With Beaches all-inclusive resorts in the Caribbean offering families the ultimate familymoon — family honeymoons that include children — your romantic getaway can be more than just a dreamy fantasy, and still involve your children.
There’s no need to drop your kids off at grandma’s for the week, if you don’t want to. Celebrate your love with the family!
A familymoon is a honeymoon that includes your children. It might seem surprising to some that parents would even want kids around during such an intimate time, but familymoons are more popular than you might think.
Couples who have kids prior to being married and in particular couples with younger kids, sometimes opt to take the children along on their honeymoon. Going on a familymoon has many pluses, including allowing your children to be part of the celebration.
In recent times, resorts seem to be catching up to the increasing popularity of familymoons, which means you’ll have lots of options to choose from when planning your own.
Insider tip: A familymoon at Beaches Resorts includes things like gourmet dining at its best, unlimited free cocktails and house wines for adults, a waterpark and plenty of activities for the kids, as well as an arcade and games room. Want to spend the evening with just the two of you? Beaches Resorts’ certified nannies are ready when you need them!
While some newlyweds with kids struggle to make the decision on who will be taking care of the rugrats while on honeymoon, others are already packing their bags and getting set for an exciting familymoon with the children in an exotic destination not too far from the States.
For some newlywed couples it’s just much easier to take their kids on their honeymoon than to organise a care-taker. In addition, a familymoon allows the children to be a bigger part of the ‘getting married’ experience.
For blended families especially, these getaways can provide an opportunity for kids from either side to get to know each other a bit better in a peaceful, neutral and fun zone, which can help speed up the bonding process. Everyone involved gets to create memories as a new family together, while the newlyweds get to enjoy quality time as well.
Did you know? The Turks & Caicos Islands are only a 1 hour and 45 minute flight from U.S. shores and are home to one of the most beautiful beach destinations in the world: Grace Bay beach. These are just two reasons to have a honeymoon in Turks & Caicos (with or without the rest of the family!).
Look for adjoining rooms (if the kids are old enough to stay in their own) or a family suite with separate bedrooms. This ensures you and your spouse will still have plenty of privacy despite taking the kids along for the ride.
Holding hands, hugging, complimenting each other openly, saying ‘I love you…’, and otherwise expressing your love and appreciation for your spouse on your familymoon is perfectly alright.
As long as you both keep things G-rated, showing affection in front of the kids can actually be beneficial to their development, as it shows them what a healthy relationship should look like. Seeing you two being affectionate can also help kids feel safer, more secure and loved.
In addition to you and your spouse being affectionate with each other, you’ll also need to make some time to show the kids some extra love as you all set off on a familymoon.
This is especially-so if two families are being combined — adults on either end will need to show equal parts of love to all kids in the new family dynamic. If you’re remarrying or getting married for the first time to someone with their own children, reassure your own kids that your love for them has not changed. All of the above can help make a familymoon more comfortable and memorable for everyone.
Getting a nanny or babysitter is a great idea when going on a familymoon. This can help ensure the kids are well cared for while parents get out to have some fun, whether that involves a spa date, or a candlelight dinner on the beach.
For a familymoon, set your sights on a family-friendly accommodation not too far from home, where kids will have more than enough activities to occupy their time. You’ll want to book a place where your children can roam around in a safe environment, so you don’t have to worry about their whereabouts all the time.
Tip: Beaches Resorts have tons of fun things for kids to do on the resort grounds, including age appropriate activities at Kids Camps, Sesame Street characters, splashing around at the Pirates Island Waterpark, and so much more. Even teens won’t get bored at Beaches Resorts, offering unlimited land and water sports, swim-up soda bars, and a night club experience catered just for them! The best part? It’s all included in the booking price.
There’s no doubt about it, traveling with your kids can be a fulfilling experience no matter the occasion - but also tiring. Once you’re done with your familymoon, you may want to spend some time alone with your spouse to celebrate your marriage in a quieter way. When you all are back home, you can get a friend or family member to watch the kids, while you two get away or spend a night or two alone as a couple.
Doing this will allow you both to unwind from the vacation, and enjoy each other’s company.
When looking for the ideal familymoon destination, look in the direction of tropical islands that are family-friendly and not too far from home. Ensure there’ll be enough things both kids and adults can do to have a good time.
For blended families, a familymoon might be the first trip away together, so choose a destination that’ll be memorable. Some options include theme parks, big city getaways, and all-inclusive beach resort vacations. Your ideal choice of a place to go will combine elements of relaxation, fun, and adventure, mixed in with lots of romance for the happy couple!

Family friendly all-inclusive resorts, like Beaches, which has properties in both Jamaica and the Turks and Caicos Islands, are located on a short flight from the USA and provide a top-notch all-inclusive vacation experience for families with children.
The best part about it all is that you can get some time for yourself too even if you’re traveling with a baby or toddler! Now of course that may seem a little too good to be true, but with Beaches Resorts it is not. There are even certified babysitters and nurseries that ensure that even the youngest member of your family is treated like royalty, if you’re looking to spend one night on the beach for a romantic (and peaceful) dinner with your other half!

Family vacations with toddlers are always filled with excitement. As you explore a world of fascinating things, your toddler will likely want to get involved in it all. The fact that toddlers are likely to be thrilled at the chance to have an adventure of any kind takes a lot of the pressure off choosing the destination, but especially for families with toddlers and other kids, it can be hard to please everyone.
Toddlers love the beach, and the mere mention of a beach vacation is sure to cause excitement. Your toddler may not know exactly what a beach vacation entails, but once they get there, they’ll be thrilled about seeing new things and getting to spend time with their parents and siblings. Some of the best islands for beach vacations with toddlers are Jamaica and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Animals are fascinating. Your toddler will certainly agree during a getaway where they get to spend some time on a ranch. From pony and hayrides, to feeding animals and learning how things are grown, this will be an interactive experience for your toddler. At some ranches, toddlers will also be able to feed and help care for the animals, which will grant them one on one moments where they can see some of the animals they always read about in real life. Meeting cowboys and engaging in sing-alongs are some of the other things that will have your toddler in a state of pure delight during your family ranch visit.
Give your toddler an introduction to sea life with a visit to an aquarium. This can be part of a family vacation which is centered on learning, exploration, and enjoyment. There are aquariums that cater just to children, and in most of these the viewing windows are a bit lower, which allows your toddler to be more immersed in the experience. You can help your toddler make sense of what they see by explaining to them the growth process of fishes and other basic biology. You can also point out the various colors and even some of the types of fishes, some of which your toddler may try to imitate.

No matter how old your kids are, all it takes a bit of searching to find a family vacation experience they’ll love. If you’re open to discovering new things and letting the kids lead the way, you’ll be well on your way to a vacation that’s unforgettable.
Water play and vacation seem to go hand in hand for kids, and you’ll find a world of this during your Caribbean vacation. In fact, other than having some of the most incredible beaches on the globe, the Caribbean also has some awesome waterparks. Beaches Resorts in Jamaica and Turks & Caicos have their own all-inclusive waterparks where kids can spend as long as they’d like zooming down the enormous waterslides, swimming in the kid-friendly pools, and even indulging in the swim-up soda bars. Other attractions include whirlpools, water cannons, the lazy river, and the only surf simulator in the Caribbean. Beaches Resorts are popular with families because there’s something to do for everyone, including parents.
Though theme park vacations can be a little on the higher end, in terms of price, they offer a chance to have the family vacation of a lifetime. There’s so much fun to be had in all the available rides and other attractions that your kids probably won’t be able to contain themselves. This is one of the top picks for family vacations because there are so many parks along different themes that allow kids to let their imaginations run wild. You may have to sift through the details to find the one best suited for your family, but once you do the whole family will be in for a thrill.
Train trips are a sure way to create nostalgic memories to look back on later. They’re also a good way to let the kids see the world from a different perspective. Looking out the window at natural and manmade landscapes zooming past, you and your family will have plenty of time to connect. This is a great way to have your kids experience a different sort of travel which is comfortable and easy.

Teens can be a little harder to impress when it comes to finding a good family vacation destination, but once they’re sold on your suggestions or get to add input, they’ll be the happiest campers in any foreign land. Here are a few ideas families with teens will love:
If your kids are in their teens, they’re likely to enjoy a beach getaway that gives them an opportunity to do nothing but sprawl out on the beach in a swimsuit all day. If they’re on an idyllic Caribbean shore on islands like Jamaica or Turks and Caicos, this is amplified because these islands have so much to offer in addition to sun, sea and sand. During a vacation with plenty of time on the beach as the core objective, your teen won’t be able to get over just how perfect the weather can be in this part of the world, and how warm and clear the ocean is!
Tip: Grace Bay beach was voted the best beach in the world is less than a two-hour flight from the US!
Vacations with promises of adventure are a great way to keep teens off their phones â€' if only for a few hours at a time. Many families use these to get their teens to disconnect and live in the moment. Fun things to try during a thrill-seeking vacation include snowboarding, surfing, skiing (or water skiing), ziplining, rock climbing, hiking, and cycling. There are so many options that you’re best off discussing with your teen what they’d like to do most so you can plan a vacation around their interests. If you have a bigger family, you’ll need to do some research to find out which activities are available for the rest of the family, so everyone is happy. With teens though, the trick is making sure there are fun ways to burn off their excess energy and ensuring they at least get some input in scheduling various things during your family vacation.
Your teen will have lots to talk about once they return home from their voluntourism trip. Depending on where they travel to and how they spend their time, this kind of trip will certainly help them grow philanthropic roots. This is a great getaway for teens who are about to leave school and head out into the world as it gives them a chance to view life from a different perspective. Let your teens get involved with activities that help the less fortunate and more vulnerable communities which can have a real feel-good effect. Plus, they’ll be able to recognize their own advantages in life which can spur an even greater desire to give back. Whether this is organized through a school, church group, or nonprofit, or you and your teen will be travelling on your own, this will undoubtedly be a life changing experience.

Family beach days are among the simplest yet special happenings; many people keep these experiences close to their hearts for a lifetime. If you’ve got a family beach day on the horizon with immediate or extended family and want to make it extra special, check out our 33 best family beach games that are perfect for an exciting beach day!
Expert tip: What are family beach games without the right beach destination? Here are some family vacation ideas to consider that’ll be fun for everyone!
A water bucket relay will be a great way to get the excitement started on the beach. If you’re traveling with family, you can split into teams of at least two. Each team should have a bucket of water, and you can use spoons, shells, or any convenient tool of your choice to scoop water from the sea into your bucket. Do this in turns within teams. The winning relay title goes to whichever team fills their bucket first!
Limbo is good fun no matter the setting. All you’ll need for some good beachside limbo action is a pool noodle, or perhaps even some driftwood. You can set the stage for some exciting rounds of limbo, music included. A portable speaker playing festive music will help everyone really get into the game. Young and old can participate in beach limbo on some level, and you can make the game progressively more challenging. How low can you go?
Picture: The expansive white-sand shores of Seven Mile Beach make an excellent venue for your family beach games! Exciting all-inclusive family resorts like Beaches Negril give you access to the Seven Mile Beach plus a world of fabulous amenities like anytime meals and snacks, day and night entertainment, a waterpark, lazy river, and swim-up soda bars - always included, always unlimited!
Seashells are often available in abundance on the beach, so why not make a fun activity that includes searching for shells? A seashell hunt works best on a beach with lots of shells, so this is something you can do some research about before you go. The objective of a seashell hunt will be to see who can find the most shells or the biggest shells in a set amount of time. When everyone is done finding shells, give points for the number of shells, the types of shells as well as shapes, sizes, and colors.
Expert tip: Make this experience fun for little kids as well by letting them in on some conch shell magic. Did you know you can hear the sound of the ocean inside a large conch shell? The kids will love listening in!
A game of Frisbee on the beach won’t be too complicated to organize. All you’ll really need to do is pop one into your bag at some point while you’re packing, and you’ll have everything you need for an invigorating game at the seashore. The best kind of Frisbee will be lightweight and buoyant, so you can find it easily if it gets tossed into the water. Once you’re out on the beach, split into teams and enjoy some good family fun.
Rounders or cricket at the beach is a great option for large families, particularly those with older kids. These games tend to involve quite a bit of running around, so it's best to play when it isn’t too hot out. A good rule of thumb when planning to play rounders/cricket on the beach is to choose a beach that isn’t too busy so that others aren’t inconvenienced if your ball goes astray.
Kite flying is something you can plan out way ahead of your beach day in order to get everyone involved. If you’re traveling with family, you can opt to get a kite for everyone old enough to fly one, even letting your kids pick out their own. Handmade kites are an option as well. As you plan your kite flying beach day, keep in mind that the best kite flying days will be those that are very windy, so it may be a little too cool to take a dip.
Digging holes in the sand almost seems to come naturally to kids at the beach, so why not make a game out of it? Can your kids make their own pool in the sand? How deep and wide can you all dig if you dig together? Get everyone in on the fun and when you’re done, take a photo of everyone standing inside the hole.
Expert tip: Dig away from the tide to avoid your hole filling back up too quickly.
Beach volleyball is a sunny day beach classic and you and the kids can enjoy a few rounds of this game on a beautiful beach day. You’ll need at least two players to get a game of beach volleyball going, but if there are more people in your group it's even better. If you’ve got a really large group, you can even try a round of beach volleyball with adults versus kids!
Picture: Beaches includes more land sports than any other resorts in the Caribbean, so there are no limits to what you can play, when you can play.
Kids, for whatever reason, love playing tug of war, and out on the beach, you can stir up their competitive side with mention of this challenge. You’ll need at least two players to get this game started, but it’s more fun with four or more people. Start things off by putting a marker on the sand — a digging toy, bucket, or pool noodle can be ideal. The best of 3 out of 5 rounds wins!
If you’ve heard of snow angels, then you’ve likely also heard of sand angels. In case you haven’t, making angels in the sand is a real possibility. All you’ll need to do is get a spot in the sand, lay down, and proceed to use some ‘starfish’ action to create your angel. When you and the kids are done, you can use pebbles and shells to decorate your sand angels.
Good to know: Making sand angels is a great way to warm up after taking a dip in the ocean.
Much like seashell hunting, a treasure hunt on the beach is a great way to keep kids occupied. The difference between these two games is that for a treasure hunt, you’ll have more say in what the kids will find along the way if you place some items beforehand. Or, you can go the natural route and search with the kids to see what you all can find — anything from shells and pebbles to various flora and fauna.
If you hide the items for your family treasure hunt yourself, you can create a list of things the kids should look for and direct them to the area they should search. The winner of the beach treasure hunt can be the person who gets the most varied items (if you go the natural route), or whoever finds the most items from your list.
Grab a soccer ball and head to the beach for some sports action. This is a great way to get the whole family involved and all you’ll need, in addition to a ball, are a few markers in the ground for goals. Things like towels, buckets, sand mounds, or castles can be used to mark out goals. Split up into teams into a minimum of four players and start tossing the ball around. With the recommended amount of players, you’ll have two goalkeepers and two strikers, but the more players the merrier with this beach game. Five players on each side are ideal if you can manage it!
Expert tip: Want to plan a fun-filled vacation with older kids? These tween-friendly vacations will be met with immediate smiles!
Heard of musical chairs? Well, musical towels is a similar concept. All you’ll need to get the musical towels party started is a portable speaker, some good music, and beach towels. Spare clothing can also come in handy if you don’t have enough towels. The same rules of musical chairs apply to musical towels. Anyone in your family who is old enough can take turns being in charge of the music and removing the towels as you go along.
Making sand mermaids on the beach can be fun. This activity works best when one family member agrees to be the model. Have the model sit or lay in the sand and cover them up to their chest or waist. Once that’s done, you can have fun shaping a mermaid’s tail around their legs. Decorate mermaid tails with seashells, seaweed, pebbles, and other beachside finds. Be sure to take photos to capture the memories. Funny poses are recommended!
If you’re planning a beach day with the kids, but you’re not necessarily going to swim, it helps to have some fun activities planned. One of these activities can be rock painting. You’ll have to plan ahead for this activity as you’ll need supplies such as brushes and acrylic paints. You can choose a beach theme, gather some rocks with the kids, and then settle in for some painting. Play around with form and color, and perhaps even try painting a sunset, sunrise, underwater scene, or something completely abstract.
Hoop toss or ring toss is a game that will definitely bring out the competitive side in members of your family. You can play this game in a group or split into two teams. Play to see who can score the most points. You can purchase packaged ring toss games, or you can get creative and make your own. Consider including prizes to up the excitement factor!
Floats make a day at the beach or the pool extra exciting, so why not bring them along for a family beach extravaganza? You can use the floats to set up some fun water races from one end of the beach to the other. Stay close to shore, especially when younger kids are involved. If the water isn’t calm, or if your group doesn’t include strong swimmers, then this activity may not be ideal.
Want to set up an artsy beach day? You can arrange a drawing challenge for your family where everyone is required to draw what they see. All you’ll need is some paper, pencils/pens, and some fluid imagination. This activity is great for kids of all ages, but older kids might make a better attempt at recreating beautiful beach scenery. Kids can draw what they see, and even throw in some extras like dolphins, whales, mermaids, and even pirate ships. When all is said and done, you’ll be able to take your creations home and maybe even frame them!
Expert tip: Planning a family reunion? Consider a family reunion vacation in the Caribbean! A relaxing beach atmosphere might be just what you need so that everyone can unwind and get into fun beach games too!
An active beach day can include a beach ball relay, for which you’ll need a minimum of four players. This game works for kids of all ages, and adults will be able to have a great time as well. The beach ball relay will involve passing a beach ball between your knees and seeing which team can complete the task the fastest. Smaller teams can work on beating their best time, while larger groups will be able to race to the finish.
Want to teach your kids a lesson on caring for the environment? A good way to do this would be to get the whole family involved in a beach clean-up activity. You might even be able to make a game out of it — whoever can fill their bag with the most trash gets a prize. Keep your kids safe during this activity by equipping them with gloves and keeping them supervised.
Have a pirate-themed beach day and spend some time searching for buried treasure. You can use play or real coins and bury these in the sand, or even go the extra mile and find a makeshift treasure chest that you can fill with goodies. Give the kids shovels and let them dig to find the treasure. To make the game feel more authentic, create a treasure map with clues and hand one out to each participant.
Want to take advantage of the picture-perfect beach scenery with some amazing family photos? Set up a pre-planned or spontaneous beach photoshoot on your own. You can set your camera or phone timer and get the settings just right for the perfect beachside snaps, or you can let the kids be photographers for the day. You all can also take some silly selfies together to capture the moments.

I Spy can be a fun way to keep kids occupied on the beach. Younger kids, especially, will enjoy this game that involves guessing various beach sightings in the vicinity using simple clues. Use themes like colors, nature, or items we brought to the beach. Keep things easy for younger kids and add more variation for older kids.
From the pillow fort at home to the sand fort out on the beachfront, your kids will love having some super cozy times at the beach. The whole family can get involved in the fort-building efforts with a few spades and buckets. You can find ideas on Pinterest for various types of forts that you can make together.
Sharks and minnows is a swimming game that’s most suited for older kids. This game can also be modified to be played on the sand if there are younger kids involved. To play this game, you should select a ‘shark’ out of the group who will be tasked with ‘tagging’ the minnows when they attempt to get onto the shore. This game usually requires a referee to make those close calls, so adults can take turns filling that position!
Pictionary is familiar to most people, but out on the beach, this game can be played a little differently. No pen and paper are necessary! Instead, you can just make shapes on the sand with things like seashells, pebbles, seaweed, or driftwood. Each player will take turns drawing whatever comes to mind as everyone else tries to guess what it is before the drawing is completed. Whoever identifies the object in the drawing first will be declared the winner, and that person will be next to draw/make their own creation in the sand. Pictionary can be enjoyed by kids of all ages.
Looking for something different to do on this beach trip? Take some dodgeball action to the seashore! This option is most ideal if you’ll be spending some time on the beach with older kids and teenagers who can get bored easily. You can get everyone together and compete in teams for prizes. Use a beach ball to reduce the likelihood of injuries. This game is ideal for big groups and teams.
Expert tip: Teen-friendly vacations can take a bit of extra planning. Here are some vacation ideas for families with teenagers that’ll help keep boredom at bay.
Take a break from the beach action for some good ol’ TikTok. Most kids won’t say no to this activity, especially if they’re already fans of TikTok. You can get together and make a family-style TikTok dance. These types of videos are just as fun to make as they are to watch over and over when you all get home. Try different dances, and if grandparents are on this beach trip as well, see if the kids can persuade them to be part of the fun!
Also known as tic-tac-toe or Xs and Os, you can play noughts and crosses in the sand with your family during your beach day. Only two players are needed to play this game, so it is suitable for small beach groups as well. Make your game of noughts and crosses more interesting by adding prizes for the person with the most wins after a certain number of rounds.
A game of 20 questions will be embraced by older kids and teens who can easily wrap their minds around the rules. You’ll need a minimum of two players for this game, and once you’ve got enough people, you can quickly get things underway. Start by choosing an individual. You can choose someone you all know personally or even a celebrity! After you have chosen, the other players will have to guess who you picked by asking no more than 20 questions about them.
When was the last time you played hangman? If it’s been a while, sand hangman might just be the perfect reintroduction. The rules of the game are the same with the exception that pen and paper are swapped for sand and a branch. Use simple words when playing with younger kids, and go harder with teenagers and adults. For teens and adults, you can also use phrases, lyrics, and things along those lines.
Are there lots of rock pools on the beach you’ve selected? If so, it’ll be perfect for a rock pool search game. Kids of all ages will love a chance to put their observational skills to the test scouring the rock pools for signs of life. See if you can find any critters in the rock pools, and as you all search together, use the experience as an opportunity to teach kids about the animals that live on and around the beach.
You can’t go wrong with some sandcastle building on the beach with kids. There are many ways you can go about this classic activity, from simply going the freestyle route and building your sandcastle by hand, or getting various sandcastle molds to make your creation extra special. Fairytale and pirate themes can provide great inspiration for sandcastle building projects, and you’re free to make them as big or as complex as you like!
Expert tip: Sandcastle building is not only fun but it can be educational for kids as well. You can teach young kids how they can make solid sandcastles with just the right amount of water and sand.
Sunburn is the worst, especially on a family vacation. Avoid this nuisance by putting on lots of full-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen (with SPF 50 and above). Reapply often for yourself and the kids, just as much as everyone gets in and out of the water. Older kids can reapply themselves (though they’ll typically need reminders from you!).
Help kids stay cool with hats, preferably those that cover the sensitive areas of their face and their ears as well. Sunshades and other sun protectant gear will also come in handy on extra sunny days.
If you’re headed to a windier beach, windbreakers will come in handy to protect you and your kids from the elements.
The best time to go to the beach is usually in the early morning before 10 am, or later in the afternoon from 3 pm onwards. The hours between 10 am and 2 pm tend to be peak sun times, though this can vary depending on your destination.
It goes without saying that you should be extra vigilant when going to the beach with kids. You’ll need to stay alert at all times, especially when younger kids are in and near the water. Keep an eye on older children as well, and educate them on things like riptides and other possible dangers on the beach.
Waterproof cases or pouches are a great way to keep your devices safe and dry if you decide to bring them on the beach with you. If you think it’ll be too much of a hassle to bring them along, leave your devices in your hotel room or at home.
Spending hours on the beach in the sunshine is a sure way to build up a thirst. Bring along plenty of water and juice for yourself and the kids, especially if you’ll be going to a beach that isn’t near any shops or restaurants. Pack some snacks as well and make sure not to leave any trash behind when you leave the beach.
Expert tip: When planning a beach vacations with a toddler or vacations with a baby, these kid-friendly vacations are highly recommended!
There are so many things you can do on a beach with family, aside from just swimming and playing in the sand. Depending on which beach you go to, you can try water sports, play some beach games, make sandcastles, and just let loose and have a good time.

Expert tip: Heading on vacation with family and not sure what to pack? Here’s our ultimate family beach vacation packing list.
Packing is an exciting moment before going off on vacation. It signals that the time to set off is near, and that fun times are around the corner. Packing for a beach vacation though can be stressful for parents who must supervise this process, or pack for younger children.
While many people suggest packing light for vacation, the emphasis is on ensuring you have the right things for every scenario â€' like beach time, dinner time, off-property excursions, tours, and casual outings. Aside from carefully picked out clothing, you’ll need about two or three pairs of shoes for everyone to match the various occasions; this includes flip-flops, one pair of casual shoes (sneakers), and something a little dressier for dining, or another fancy occasion.
Picture: Pirates Island waterpark at family resort Beaches Negril, located on Seven Mile beach in Jamaica.
You will know best how to pack for your children â€' one of the challenges may be convincing older kids that they do not need to pack their entire closet, and every single bathing suit, for just a 5-day beach getaway. Keep in mind that travelling with babies generally requires that you pack more, including diapers, wipes, bottles, clothing, toys, and other essentials. While you may not be able to lighten baby’s requirements much, you can definitely shrink the list of things to pack for yourself and older kids. Use our list of what to pack for a family beach vacation below to help not forget the essentials, but not to overpack as well.
Tip: Want to bring the kids to the most beautiful beach of Jamaica? Book a family room at Beaches family-friendly all-inclusive resort in Negril, located on Seven Mile Beach. The resort offers certified nannies for the younger kids, so parents can have some down-time too. For older kids, all watersports (with professional instructions) and unlimited access to Negril’s Pirates Island waterpark are included in your stay!
It can be hard to find a suitable sunscreen in a foreign country, especially if you’re used to using specific or organic brands. Depending on where you’re travelling to, sunscreen can also be costly. Pack a couple bottles (or sprays) to bring along with you. After-sun gels are useful too. Hats also, are a must. Bring along a multi-purpose, quick-dry hat for each member of your family.
Tip: Bring reef-safe and waterproof sunscreen to protect the coral you might encounter during snorkeling trips. The golden rule when it comes to bringing sunblock on a family beach vacation: if you think you packed enough sunscreen, pack even more.
Keep your kids safe by investing in life jackets for your beach vacation. Children’s life jackets are usually relatively lightweight, which means they’ll be easy to pack. You can choose between puddle jumpers (for younger kids), and kiddie life jackets for those who are older. Life jackets are worth the investment, and can save a life.
From pool rafts to inflatable ride ons, floaties are a must for beach days with younger kids. These will definitely add some excitement to your beach day, and the best part is that they don’t take up much space in your luggage. If you want to avoid having to blow these up yourself once you arrive, bring along a portable pump to speed things up.
Dinosaur sand molds? Check. Water blasters? Check. Water and sand sifter? Check! Don’t forget to also bring along oldies but goodies like frisbees, kites, inflatable beach balls, small sand trucks, boogie boards (if they can fit in your bag!) and the like. While selecting toys for the beach, keep in mind that small toys that can get lost or buried in the sand aren’t the best option.
Beach tents are a popular choice for families heading out on beach vacations with small children. There are many uses for these, from keeping kids from getting too much sun and the resulting sunburn, to giving nursing moms some added privacy. Most kiddie beach tents can fold and pack up easily, and they’re awesome especially to give napping babies or toddlers a comfortable space in the shadow.
Helpful hint: Beach tents work best when it’s not windy!
Beach umbrellas are useful when heading out on a beach vacation, especially if you plan on checking out beaches that are outside of your resort (not all have beach chairs and umbrella setups). There are some pretty neat beach umbrellas on the market that are handy and durable - some even have air vents and windows (vented canopy umbrella). If you want to get a small umbrella, there are half size ones which are perfect for little ones who want their own beach umbrella. These can also be used for kids picnic tables and sandboxes.
The great thing about water shoes is that most of them are styled like regular shoes, so your kids will be able to live in them throughout their beach vacation. These are also great for protecting little feet from hot sand, sharp shells and rocks, sea urchins, and coral. They also come in handy for kids who’re afraid of stepping on things like sea moss. All in all, a good investment for all your kids ahead of your vacation!
Mesh hampers have so many uses including being the ideal toy tote for a beach day. Most of these are collapsible, so you won’t need to worry about carrying anything bulky around. Your kids can stuff their beach toys in there on the way to the beach, and pack them away easily when it’s time to go!
Pro tip: Bring differentiating passport covers, so the family can easily recognize which passport belongs to who.
Travel is one of those times when you’ll be glad to have some of your kid’s handy gadgets around. Try not to worry too much about screen time as you’re traveling to and from your destination; your kids will get more than enough time away from electronics once they get to the destination. To keep them entertained along the way, bring along things like tablets, coloring/sticker books, and other toys and games. Pick out games that do not have small pieces that can get lost.
Your kids will appreciate having some of their favorite things to snack on while at the airport, or even once you get to the resort before heading out to dinner. It may take them some time to get used to the snacks available in their new environment, but a couple packs of home-bought snacks will go over well with everyone and get you some peace of mind. Easy options include crackers, cereal, nuts, chips, and dried fruit. During travel, make sure kids stay hydrated with bottles of water too.
You may not be doing laundry at all for the duration of your trip, so don’t be afraid to throw in a few extra things. It might also be expensive to shop in your destination, so don’t count on doing a lot of that, or even finding a department store in a place you’re unfamiliar with. Why go through any of that hassle anyway â€' just throw in those extra t-shirts!
Insider tip: Never pack more than a week’s worth of clothing, even if you’re planning to stay longer. Make use of local laundry facilities instead. Beaches all-inclusive resorts for example, offer laundry service. Still worried you’ve packed too heavy? Bring a portable luggage scale to make sure you’re not going over the weight limits.
A blanket, a pillow or a favorite plush toy… whatever your child needs to keep calm and be comforted that can fit in their carry on, bring it along!
It’ll be reassuring to know you can just reach into your bag and find what you need, like a thermometer when away from home. Baby acetaminophen or ibuprofen and band aids are some other must-include items for your first aid kid.
Good to know: Beaches Resorts have registered nurses on all their properties daily (during office hours), who provide their service free of charge to guests.
Wipes are not something you want to travel without, especially if you have younger, diaper-wearing children. Judge how much to bring depending on how many you use per day, or per week. Wipes can also come in handy when travelling with older children for quick clean ups.

When deciding on a vacation destination, it is important to be laser focused. In the initial planning stages, the amount of choices might be overwhelming. There’s nothing relaxing about planning a family vacation! Hopefully you’ll get some of that when on location.

Settling on a destination for your family vacation is hard. There are so many different things to keep in mind; from the kind of experience you’re looking to have, how much you’re willing to spend, what you’d like to see, and the interests of both parents and kids.
A great place to start is by listing what everyone likes to do, and the activities you enjoy doing together. Whether this includes going on long hikes, spending time at museums and other historic places, or simply going to the beach, all this information will come in handy when deciding where to go. If your trip includes family members who do not live near you, you can involve them in the process by sending out an email survey to weigh preferences.
Create a list of places based on where you have always wanted to go and consider which attractions and activities are available in each. Give points to places with stunning nature, varied land and sea activities, spas, and dining. You’ll be able to narrow down your destination list depending on what’s available where. You’ll also be able to swipe some other places off the list depending on your budget, distance to destination, availability of flights, and other considerations.
Say for instance, the kids are set on a winter vacation somewhere there’s snow, while parents just want to lounge and decompress somewhere sunny where they can go snorkeling from a tropical beach. This is a common dilemma many families face when deciding on a vacation destination, especially if they have older kids. Know that while everyone may not be able to get what they want; you can all meet somewhere in the middle. Pick somewhere that everyone can find something to do that they enjoy.
Time of year matters when it comes to travel, as prices, weather and crowds vary depending on the low, shoulder, and peak seasons of individual destinations. Many families choose to travel during the summer, which is peak season in some places. For countries in the Caribbean though, summer is associated with shoulder season travel â€' during this time you may find better prices and less crowds on the beach. Summer is also a great time to travel because the kids are out of school, and thus they won’t be missing out on anything. Spring break is another option, as is winter vacation.
Overall, if you want to save money, travel during the low season. Keep in mind this means conditions like weather may be less than optimal and there might be less going on, but there are also the benefits; like being able to secure accommodation and book tours without much hassle.
Pro tip: For parents who have no alternative other than taking kids out during the middle of the school year due to an inflexible vacation schedule, plan with your child’s teachers so they can do some extra work before setting off. Avoid scheduling trips during standardized test time, as it can be hard to reschedule these.
Not sure where to start when planning a family vacation? Creating a budget will help you make some headway. Where this is concerned, you’ll need to decide how much you are willing to spend early on in the process, and on what. Once you’ve decided on your budget, you’ll be able to select your accommodation, activities, and other things that are important to you and your family.
Some things that you will need to budget for include:
Aside from thinking about and budgeting for how you and your family will get there, whether by airplane, train, or by car, you’ll need to decide how you’re going to get around once you arrive. If you’re going by plane or train, you may need a car to take you around and fuel top ups should be part of your budget. You’ll also need to include the expected cost of rentals and taxis.
Picture: At Beaches Resorts, kids get extra attention with tailorâ€made fun just for them, offering age-appropriate activities for kids of all ages, from tots to teens.
Options are endless when it comes to accommodation for your family vacation, but this list is a little less broad when travelling with kids. Family travel requires picking a hotel, resort, villa, or other accommodation with proper amenities.
If you’re staying at a hotel or resort, you’ll want to look into entertainment and activities, and the cost of this. You might find a lot of the activities already to be included in the price of your stay! Beaches Resort has some great all-inclusive family resorts with waterparks in both Jamaica and Turks & Caicos. As these resorts are all-inclusive, they allow families to stick to a fixed budget. Beaches is a fun zone for kids, with everything from waterparks, to Sesame Street characters, Kids Club and activities tailored for kids of all ages. The charm of all-inclusive resorts for family vacations is that there’s something to do for the entire family, so you don’t have to worry about your spendings during your stay.
Food is an important consideration for any vacation, but even more so when you’re travelling with children. This is where research matters â€' it is best to stay at a hotel or resort with lots of good food options that fit neatly into your budget. Again, many parents find it worthwhile to stay at an all-inclusive family resort which takes away the burden of trying not to overspend on food.
Keep in mind that when planning your vacation, even if you’re staying at an all-inclusive property you may want to factor in a night or two of dining outside the resort. If you won’t be staying at an all-inclusive, go for a hotel or even a villa or bed and breakfast with a kitchen, which can help keep costs down.
Excursions can be costly, so the budget conscious will need to plan this aspect carefully. With that said, there are lots of options to keep kids busy while on vacation. Parents can opt to take their kids to amusement parks or on adventure tours. Depending on where you go shows, concerts, and museums are other options. Plan carefully and ensure you take into account the cost of tickets or bookings for everyone who will be included. Make sure the drive to the local attractions is not too long.
Souvenirs are important memories to your family vacation, and it’s useful to create a budget for this as well. A tried-and-tested approach is saving change in a jar ahead of your trip to be used for souvenir shopping. When the money runs out, so does your souvenir splurging. Kids can also save up to get unique items they like that may only be found in your vacation destination - like unique seashells. When it’s time to go home, you can ship items that are too bulky (like art) straight to your residence, so you can travel light.
Saving is an important aspect of travel and can influence the kind of vacation you eventually end up having. The longer you save before going, and the more money that goes into your savings fund, the more things you’ll be able to do while away. Be realistic in how much you can save per week (or month); this can be done individually, or in a special family vacation account. The great thing about saving is that the sooner you get serious about it, the sooner you’re able to meet your goal!
Insider tip: Beaches Resorts makes family vacation planning super convenient with their layaway program that enables guests to pay for their booking over time. Once you set foot on the resort, no extra expenses are needed. Airport transfers, the water park, Kids Club, magic shows, drinks, high-quality food at up to 21 restaurants per resort, ice cream, cotton candy, mac and cheese - it’s all included, always unlimited. Parents can even drink unlimited cocktails mixed with premium liquors at the swim-up bar!
It is highly recommended when traveling with children to look for direct flights, as opposed to making sure you fly with your favorite airline. Flights with long layovers are not ideal although sometimes this is unavoidable. The younger your children, the less patience they may have with this. Parents with babies (under the age of 2) may want to avoid lengthy layovers altogether. If there is no other option, do some research to find out whether the terminal at the airport is baby-friendly, and whether there are nursing rooms. Some terminals have toddler-friendly play spaces which can help pass the time with your child.
Find out also if there are changing tables on the plane that are practical, and whether bulkhead seats are available. While you may not find this information on official websites of the airline or airport, calling directly should help get you the details you need.
Picture: Beaches Negril captures the essence of a laid-back paradise along with the elegance of a luxury resort.
Accommodation is a big consideration when travelling with kids. Wherever you decide to stay, you’ll want to ensure that it’s comfortable, safe and ideally located near some local attractions you’re interested in seeing. If you plan on staying at a hotel or resort, find out if they have kids’ menus, games rooms, kids’ clubs, kiddie pools, comfortable cribs, and bathtubs.
Pro tip: Read reviews from reputable sites before booking your vacation. Consider things like how far your resort is from things you’d like to do, and whether you’ll need a rental. Some families prefer options with 24-hour room service, or a kitchen to make their own meals.
The safety and wellbeing of their children is always at the forefront of any parent’s mind. Vacation time is not excluded. Things like whether you can find an English-speaking doctor if you need one and the quality of hospitals available at your destination are common considerations. Healthwise, it’s also important to ensure your children have all the necessary vaccinations before heading off to foreign destinations. This can be sorted out with a quick trip to their pediatrician. Overall, travel protection plans are recommended for family and other types of travel. These can help safeguard families against the unexpected, including cancellation fees, trip interruption, medical expenses, and expenses related to baggage loss or delay.
Insider tip: Beaches Resorts offers travel protection and have a registered nurse available on-property in case something happens. Her services are complimentary.
During the booking process, offer the staff as much information as you can about the needs of your family, so that the staff can accommodate. This accounts for both the staff of the accommodation as the staff of your flight. Make sure to mention food allergies and special needs of the children. If you forget to mention important details during booking, you can do so once you arrive. Parents with kids with sensory difficulties can also inform their accommodation about this. Be specific about what your child can and cannot tolerate, like strong smelling cleaning products.
Just as it is important to book your trip in advance, so too it is necessary to schedule your activities and excursions as early as possible. Doing so will ensure that things flow smoothly once you get to your destination. This should be a priority especially during the peak season, to avoid being unable to do certain things as a result of tours being sold out.
Things to book in advance include tours, theater tickets, and theme park tickets. Get your kids involved in this process by getting their input on what they’d like to do once at the destination. This can save you from spending on things they really aren’t interested in. Factor in how many excursions you want to book, keeping in mind some of the things that may already be available for free at your hotel or resort.
Generally, travelers are required to have at least 6 months remaining on their passports before expiry when traveling overseas. This means your passport should be valid at least 6 months beyond your departure date. Additionally, and even more important, every member of your family including kids (no matter their age) will need a passport for international travel by air.
If your child does not have a passport, apply for one well ahead of your trip as processing takes time. If your child is under 16, you’ll need to apply at a local passport agency in person, and your child is also required to make an appearance. When applying, bring along all necessary supporting documentation to speed up the process. Also inquire about getting your passports expedited. If you need to get a new passport, you can find the DS-11 Application Form, here.
Pro tip: Even if you’re feeling confident about passports check anyway for expiry dates before booking your trip. Children’s passports expire every five years. While you’re at it, check your own passport to make sure it’s up to date. Bring differentiating passport covers so you always know which passport belongs to who.
If you will be flying to your destination, it’s worthwhile spending some time getting older kids mentally prepared for the experience. This is useful particularly if it is their first time travelling, or if they haven’t travelled in a while. Tell them what the airport experience will be like, and how they’re required to behave. Go through the details like the necessity of removing shoes and jackets as they clear security.
Print or download copies of your boarding passes from home; this can cut time spent on lines. Let the kids know to expect crowds and speak to them about the importance of staying close to you to avoid getting lost. Be sure they’re aware that they need to play their games or listen to music with their headphones on, or with the sound muted, especially once they’ve boarded the aircraft. Teach them how to put their devices on airplane mode.
A good strategy for parents is using a backpack as a carry-on â€' this helps keep your hands free for grabbing wandering children, or anything else that may come up. Strollers can be used and checked in at the gate. There are similar rules for car seats.
If you’re travelling with a baby, keep in mind that TSA’s 3oz limitation on liquids, gels and aerosols in your carry-on does not include breast milk, baby food or formula. Pack as much as your baby will need.
Packing for any vacation can be a mammoth task. That is, if you don’t plan properly or try to gain as much insight as possible ahead of your adventure to foreign shores. Packing for a family vacation, you’ll have to take many things to keep in mind. What the children think they need, what they actually need, and the things you yourself absolutely can’t afford to leave behind.
No parent wants to arrive at a foreign destination to find that their kid has forgotten a favorite toy, a snack they simply can’t live without, or worse â€' they don’t have enough clothing to tide over the week they’re there. To avoid any of these scenarios, it’s important to make packing a joint process with kids who are old enough to help. Even with kids who think they’ve got it covered; parents can do a once over to ensure they’re really all set before you all leave the house.
In addition to passports, tickets and other travel documents, phones, chargers, pens (for immigration forms!), and local currency, some essential items for family travel might include baby necessities such as daily use and comfort items, entertainment to take kids smoothly through wait times, extra clothes, sunscreen and hats, water shoes (if going to a place where there’s a pool or beach), first aid items, wipes (they come in handy for everyone!) and reservation information.
Some parents find it worthwhile to include a change of clothes in their kids’ carry-ons just in case luggage gets lost or misplaced. This can help ensure all bases are covered, and that you have a smooth vacation experience.
All in all, packing enough is important, but it is also important not to go overboard to avoid overweight charges, especially if you plan to do some shopping at your destination. When you plan properly, packing can be a stress-free process that everyone can enjoy.
Flexibility is important for a stress-free vacation experience. Even if there are a lot of different things you want to do with the kids, like going to a theme park, a zoo, or just exploring downtown, try not to schedule more than two activities a day. Factor in how long it will take to get to each place and wait times in between.
Make sure there’s room in between these activities to relax, and potentially even return to the hotel for a breather, or to change. Parents will know best how many activities are suitable per day for their kids, depending on their ages. If your kids get cranky, don’t force them into activities. Find the balance between relaxation and fun.
Pro tip: If you plan on travelling to a destination where it’s summer, try not to have the kids out too long in the hottest hours. Keep an eye out for potential sunburn and apply lots and lots of sunscreen.
Soak in every minute of your vacation and find ways to get your kids to do so as well. Some parents recommend creating a memento package, which can be a ‘treasure chest’ filled with things you kids want to remember about your trip, including ticket stubs, coins, seashells and foreign candy wrappers, or even just a little jar of sand or dirt from a beach they loved.
Anything goes in this territory, and you don’t even need to put this together right away. You can collect the items and wait until you get back home where you can all look back at the good times together.
Pro tip: Collecting memorable things during your vacation is also a great way to encourage your kids to start their own collection. Shells, stones, postcards, stickers and other cool items are all good options to start off with.
There’s nothing quite like the bond between parents and their children, and that is something to be appreciated and celebrated. Kids grow quickly, and it is important to cherish every moment. Make time to do special things together that you will all forever keep close to your heart. That’s what family vacations are all about, and that’s the reason many families choose to splurge on that one epic trip that gives everyone something to look back on with joy for years to come. Do something you’ve always dreamed about, from renting out a luxury catamaran for a day, going on a food tour, exploring a drive-in volcano or majestic waterfall in the Caribbean, or even diving with sharks. Simplify it all by spending some time appreciating historic sites or trying out different restaurants. Whatever your desire, reach out and do it, as experiences are priceless!
Picture: Beaches Resorts partnered up with Sesame Street making it the only Caribbean resort where kids can play every day with the lovable, colorful, and friendly cast of characters.
As much as the emphasis is on family for family vacations, it’s okay to do some stuff that doesn’t involve all of you. If you have multiple kids, let your older kids enjoy an activity they’re interested in while everyone else kicks back and does something casual that they also enjoy. Mom and dad can even split up with the kids, in groups according to their ages, to do separate things. Mom may also choose to go shopping with the girls, while dad takes the boys to enjoy a surfing lesson. This can happen on a set day, in or out of the resort. Let your various interests guide you; you can also seek assistance from the resort staff on finding things to do outside the resort if needed.
Couple time can get placed on the back burner during a family vacation, but it’s important not to let that happen for parents who don’t usually get time away together. Some resorts offer nanny services if you want to plan a night out. If there’s other adults travelling in your group with kids, you can also take turns watching them. Try your best though to aim for booking a hotel or resort with a Kids Camp and certified babysitters.
Insider tip: Beaches Resorts makes it easy to keep kids occupied with a Kids Camp right on property. Whether you stay at their all-inclusive resort in Turks & Caicos or at one of the Beaches all-inclusive resorts in Jamaica, your kids will be able to spend some time in the Kids Camp where they’ll be supervised by certified nannies and kept busy with age-appropriate activities. Depending on your child’s age they can be enrolled into the Infant Program (0-2), Toddler Program (3-4), Navigators Program (5-7), Adventurers Program (8-10), Tweens Program (11-14), and the Teens Program (15-17). All these options promise good times for your kids, who’ll be able to return home with not just new experiences, but amazing new friendships. More information about the Kids Camps at Beaches.
The more time spent in a dream destination the better â€' just make sure you get home in time for everyone to have enough time to transition back into ‘normal life’. One or two days is usually enough for most people to get back to regular business of work, school, or summer camp. This also gives you enough time to catch up on sleep that you might have missed while on vacation!

As you prepare to take off for your next family getaway, remember that while vacations are meant for families to experience new things together, there are also hidden lasting benefits. You may find that you’re feeling better than you ever have, after a couple days in a new and peaceful environment, which is good for your mind, body, and soul. A healthier and more peaceful you, means you’ll be able to be more present for your kids once you all get back to reality!
