Today, I’m sharing one of the most meaningful travel experiences of my entire career—something that truly touched my heart and reminded me why I do what I do. 🌍💛
While visiting the beautiful island of Jamaica with Sandals Resorts, I had the life-changing opportunity to participate in the Reading Road Trip with the Sandals Foundation, as part of their mission to give back to local communities through education, literacy, and empowerment.
The Reading Road Trip is a unique community tourism program created by the Sandals Foundation, offering resort guests the chance to visit local schools and read to students. This initiative isn’t just about books—it’s about connection, compassion, and cultural exchange. And yes—it’s open to YOU too when you stay at Sandals Resorts or Beaches Resorts!
On Read Across Jamaica Day, I visited Salt Spring Primary School in Montego Bay, where I read stories (more than once—they asked for repeats!) to four adorable second graders. We talked about:
Family and siblings
Favorite foods
Pets, snow, dreams, and life
These little conversations quickly turned into big connections. I didn’t just read to them—I shared a moment with them. And that moment is now part of my heart forever. 💛
As part of the celebration, the Sandals Foundation also unveiled colorful new word murals on the school walls—featuring the very vocabulary the children are learning in their books. These murals now line the paths the kids walk every day, turning literacy into something living, vibrant, and empowering.
The event was attended by teachers, school officials, the Board of Education, local media, and an inspiring group of travelers who, like me, wanted to travel with intention.

Dickenson Bay, right near the resort, was a tranquil haven where we spent hours basking in the sun, enjoying the warm waters, and indulging in water sports. The bay is a picture-perfect spot for those who want to experience the essence of Antigua—a blend of relaxation and activity in the most idyllic setting. The turquoise waters were calm, the sand soft and white, and the sunsets—absolutely breathtaking.
Beyond Dickenson Bay, Antigua offered an abundance of cultural and natural attractions. We took a trip to Shirley Heights, one of the island’s most iconic viewpoints. The panoramic views from this hilltop are nothing short of stunning. You can see the entire English Harbour, surrounded by hills and crystal-clear waters that stretch to the horizon. It’s a photographer’s dream, and we couldn’t resist taking in the breathtaking vistas as the sun began to set.
For those seeking adventure, Antigua offers a range of activities, including hiking through lush rainforests, zip-lining across the treetops, and snorkeling in some of the clearest waters you’ll ever encounter. While the beauty of Sandals Grande Antigua and the surrounding area was enough to make this a dream vacation, an unexpected experience turned this trip into something far more meaningful. Just days before I arrived in Antigua, I had learned about an incredible animal rescue mission that was taking place on the island to help Dogs and Cats.
Dogs and Cats of Antigua, Inc is a registered non-profit working out of St.John’s, Antigua. They hope to create an Antigua where starving and diseased stray dogs and cats are no longer the norm. They hope to create communities with healthy animals that are loved and wanted and their population growth controlled. An island that is truly a paradise for all Gods’ creatures. They are doing this one dog and one cat at a time, and for however long it takes.
Their Mission:
Our mission is to create a network of likeminded individuals across the island to assist animals in distress and increase the welfare and protection of dogs and cats on the island, through feeding, veterinarian assistance, spay and neutering, fostering and rehoming.
We are also dedicated to educating proper animal care, stopping animal abuse, and promoting healthy and positive human and animal relationships to people of all ages and backgrounds.
Antigua is home to many stray animals, and over the years, their animal rescue organization has worked tirelessly to care for these animals and provide them with the love and attention they deserve. I was so moved by the stories I had read and heard from locals and travelers alike that I decided to get involved with one of the rescue groups.
Operation: Help Dogs and Cats of Antigua
It all began when I saw a post from a local animal rescue group on social media, urgently needing volunteers to help transport rescued animals from Antigua to new homes in the U.S. Twi, a sweet puppy living on the streets of Antigua, was one of the animals in need of a travel buddy. She had struggled with her siblings to survive in harsh conditions, and the rescue group was working hard to give her a second chance. Without hesitation, I reached out to offer my help, knowing this was a mission I couldn’t pass up.
After a few phone calls and filling out the necessary forms, I was officially chosen to accompany Twi on her journey. As my departure day approached, I prepared by packing a suitcase full of puppy formula, which was badly needed by the rescue volunteers. This simple act would make a huge difference in the lives of the many hungry puppies still waiting for their chance at life.
On the day of departure, I met the rescue team at the airport in Antigua. The farewell was bittersweet as I said my goodbyes to the amazing sanctuary team, knowing I was taking Twi one step closer to her forever home. As we boarded the plane to the United States, I reflected on the incredible journey we were about to complete together. Twi, calm and nestled at my feet, was no longer the malnourished pup the volunteers had met on the streets of Antigua. Her transformation was a testament to the resilience of both animals and humans. She had come so far, and our journey was about much more than just relocating her—it was about love, perseverance, and the powerful sense of community that had made this possible.
The suitcase I carried was greeted with overwhelming gratitude by the rescue volunteers when they received the puppy formula. They called it “gold,” knowing it would help save many lives. It was astonishing to see how something so simple could create such a huge impact, and the relief in their eyes reminded me of the ripple effect kindness can have in the world.
As I sat on the plane, I reflected on how deeply this experience had touched me. Twi was not just another rescued puppy; she was a living reminder of how compassion, teamwork, and dedication can change lives. This journey wasn’t just about her new chapter—it was about our chapter together, a journey that showed how love and care transcend all boundaries. Every life is worth saving.
Back home, Twi settled in easily. Her foster journey had begun, but this was only the start of her story. She became a constant reminder of hope, second chances, and the power of regeneration. Watching her playful energy, her trust in me, and the gratitude she exuded just by being herself brought so much joy into my life. I hoped I had brought even a fraction of that joy into her life through my own small acts of service for only a few weeks.
This rescue mission was about more than just saving one pup. It showed how love, compassion, and kindness can bring about incredible transformations. I’ll never forget the moment I first learned about Twi’s story and the chance to be a part of something so meaningful. Accompanying her on her journey wasn’t just a flight—it was a mission of hope, love, and purpose. Twi was welcomed into her forever home, where she would experience love and care she had never known before. Watching her transition from a malnourished street pup to a healthy, happy dog in a loving home was the greatest reward.
Looking back on this journey made my trip to Antigua even more special. It reminded me of the importance of giving back and how even the smallest acts of kindness can have a profound impact.
Every rescue mission, every donation, and every moment spent helping others—no matter how small—creates monumental change in the lives of those who need it most.
Through this experience, I learned that kindness is never wasted. We are all connected, and together, we can create a world where love and compassion triumph over hardship. As I watched Twi sleep peacefully at my feet, I knew this journey would be one we would both treasure forever—a journey that would continue to inspire me every day to do more, be more, and give more.
